Robert Ruark (1915-1965) ranks, in the minds of most discerning readers, as the finest outdoor writer ever to grace the American literary scene. His is an enduring fame, thanks primarily to three books, The Old Man and the Boy, The Old Man s Boy Grows Older, and an African classic, Horn of the Hunter. Of course, Ruark was also the author of several blockbuster novels, an immensely popular newspaper columnist, a satirist of considerable skill, and a tireless bon vivant. Fame and the ability to crunch out a prodigious amount of first-rate prose on his battered portable typewriter brought him considerable fortune. Now, some two generations after the Ruark s death, Sporting Classics will release a brand new book on the great author. Just recently discovered, the text was written more than forty years ago by Alan Ritchie, who faithfully served as Ruark s personal secretary and advisor for the last fourteen years of his life. The book starts out with a wonderful foreword by legendary African professional hunter Harry Selby who guided Ruark on a number of his safaris. It also features a number of photographs of Ruark that have never before appeared in any book.

About the Author
Jim Casada, the editor and compiler of this work, was a university history professor before taking early retirement to write full time on hunting, fishing, and other outdoor-related topics. He is senior editor of Sporting Classics magazine and a contributor for Outdoor Life, Cabela’s Outfitter Journal, and American Rifleman. Casada is a past president of both the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He has written, edited, or contributed to more than thirty books, including Africa’s Greatest Hunter (1998), The American Rifle (2005), and A Southern Sportsman (2010).

Review by a Ruark Fan

I am a fan of Robert Ruark's writings. Seven years ago, I read "Horn of the Hunter" before embarking on an African hunting safari. I very much enjoyed the book and proceeded to read in rapid succession "Something of Value," "Uhuru," "Use Enough Gun," "Poor No More," "The Honey Badger," "The Old Man and the Boy," "Robert Ruark's Africa," "The Lost Classics" and "A View From a Tall Hill: Robert Ruark in Africa."

Many of Ruark's writings such as "Horn of the Hunter" are stories of his own hunts and experiences. And much of his fiction is semi-autobiographical, such as the main characters in "Poor No More" and "The Honey Badger." But one wonders to what extent Ruark has embellished. This book is great because the author, having worked as Ruark's secretary for twelve years, knew him well. This is a first hand account of Ruark's life including his great drive and his destructive faults.

The book "A View From a Tall Hill: Robert Ruark in Africa" is another recent biographical account, although it focuses mostly on Ruark's hunting and other adventures in Africa. It is also a good read for a Ruark fan. Its author, Terry Wieland is a hunter and gun aficionado, which gives him experience and insight that Ritchie does not have. But Wieland did not know Ruark, which is Ritchie's advantage. Both books are good and will be enjoyed by Ruark fans.

Beyond the words

I was overjoyed to read this book and in finding out more about a wonderful writer. The best part is the book is written by Mr. Ritchie. Alan Ritchie was the personal secretary or Robert Ruark for twelve years and was present in both business and the personal affairs of Mr. and Mrs. Ruark. The "introduction" of the book is written by the outdoor writer and editor of this book Jim Casada and is most important in providing to the reader with the "who is" Mr. Ritchie, the relationship to Mr. Ruark and what and how this book even made it into print. Another great addition to this book is provided by Harry Selby the professional hunter, safari guide and friend to Mr. Ruark. Mr. Shelby offers a personal reflection how he reads "Bob Ruark" the man on safari and in the friendship between them that developed in time.
To read a book written by Ruark is one thing to read a book about Ruark's life and the times that shaped his experiences is another, so to the individual wanting to met the author I recommend this book! The real bonus for me in the book is the insight to the time before syndicated TV when the news and views of the world were paper bound and the relationship of Ruark and Hemingway in each man life. I was wonderfully surprised!

Very good introduction to physical chemistry

A previous reviewer stated that physical chemistry is complicated. As a retired NASA researcher with 44 years experience specializing in physical chemistry I readily acknowledge that physical chemistry can be a very challenging subject. But, personally, I have also found it to be immensely fascinating and rewarding. There are several good textbooks on physical chemistry but, in my opinion, none is better than this one. Levine has done a very good job of presenting the material contained in an understandable fashion without compromising scientific rigor.

An earlier reviewer stated that this book is full of inaccuracies, but I strongly disagree with this statement. One example of an alleged inaccuracy which this reviewer cited is Levine`s statement that, at the velocity of light, photons have mass. This is a true statement; photons do indeed have both mass and momentum and thus can cause pressure on objects they strike. I beg you not to be biased against this outstanding book by this flawed review.

The topic of physical chemistry -- in which chemistry, physics, and mathematics overlap and interact -- clearly does not appeal to everyone. Even many chemists shun the rigors of physical chemistry as much as possible. But for those studying this important subject, I highly recommend this book. And some of you may even come to love this fascinating subject as I do.

A great author and professor!

Prof. Ira Levine - the author of this text -- teaches at my alma mater, Brooklyn College. When I was an undergraduate, I was fortunate enough to take him for both semesters of Physical Chemistry. I must admit that he is both a wonderful lecturer and a great author. Any serious Physical Chemistry student should consider his textbook, which is clearly, written and well-organized. Excellent book but it may be difficult to learn pchem from originally

I thought that this book was very well written but as a person who was learning it for this first time it was extremely difficult to follow. Levine would frequently take pretty simple concepts and make them sound far more complicated than they really are. The reason for this is that he wanted to cover all his bases so that everything he said was utterly 100% correct. I would have liked it if he could simplify it a little more to make it easier to understand and then just say that there is an instance where it isn't true but it isn't covered until grad school. One example is that he makes the distinction between a perfect and ideal gas and then half way through the semester he tells us that they are actually the same thing. I know the logic behind it was to be perfectly rigorous with the way he was laying it out but it ended up just confusing me more. There are many good problems there and his true/false questions are very good at making sure that you know the material.

About the Author
Richard "Dick" James is a Crader Professor of Counseling at the University of Memphis. He is a licensed psychologist and licensed professional counselor. He also is a Nationally Certified School Counselor. He is currently coordinator of psychological assessment at the University of Memphis Center for Rehabilitation and teaches graduate classes in crisis intervention, theories of counseling, and school counseling at the University of Memphis. He trains police officers for crisis intervention with the mentally ill and consults on crisis intervention planning and techniques with schools, agencies, prisons and businesses.

Burl Gilliland was a twice Distinguished Professor Emeritus who taught in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Research at the University of Memphis. He was instrumental in founding the Ph.D. Program in Counseling Psychology in Memphis and served as the program director for more than a dozen years. He was recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Award for his work in race relations and human relations. He was a licensed psychologist, licensed professional counselor, and licensed school counselor. He was also a retired Captain in the U. S. Naval Reserve, having seen service in World War II and combat duty in the Korean War. He served in extensive consultative capacities with a variety of agencies, police departments, and medical and educational institutions, including service for 18 years as school psychologist for the Milan, Tennessee School District. He was active in both APA and ACA.

Basically the same as the sixth edition, other than they split the 3rd chapter into two, buy the sixth edition!

For the most part, this is just another new edition in which the publishers switched a few chapters around and changed some dates. If you must have this text, save some money and buy the sixth edition from a private seller. Also, don't waste your time reading the entire chapter, you can get the main concepts in the chapter summary.

I wouldn't recommend buying this for Kindle

First of all, I want to be clear that I think the book itself is awesome, and if you're lucky enough to have this as assigned reading for a class, I think it's a great textbook. I can't be 100% sure because I didn't investigate it beyond a page or two, but if you Google search this book, I think you can find it for free online in its entirety. But, if you have to have a copy (I'm one of those people) please think long and hard before you get the Kindle version of this book. I had surgery on my right wrist (and happen to be right handed) and it is painful for me to write notes. One of the reasons I made the switch to Kindle textbooks was because I could highlight my notes, and then go into the Kindle app on my laptop, copy and paste the notes onto a Word document, and print my notes without the pain (and a lot of time) of having to hand-write all my notes. However, this book is formatted so poorly that I think it almost takes more time to do this than it would to just hand write my notes. Copying and pasting should be simple. But the book is formatted into two columns per page, so when you paste, it doesn't format properly, and you have to spend a lot of extra time formatting the notes correctly.
So far I have purchased or rented 7 Kindle textbooks, and this one has been the worst one by far. If you have the extra money, either rent a hard copy or buy one because unless you plan to only read the book and not do any copying and pasting of your notes, it is quite a hassle.

I wish I could afford to buy this book because there is SOOO much information that I want to review. Instead, I rented it which works out for me financially. This book makes crisis intervention strategies easy to understand and provides real-life examples. Awesome!

Glutathione (or its reduced form, GSH) is a natural protein found in the body's cells and in many fresh fruits and vegetables. Pressman, a chiropractor and nutritionist, considers glutathione to be the most important antioxidant molecule, high levels of which appear to protect against the dangers of cancer, heart disease, premature aging, autoimmune diseases, and chronic illnesses. When I ordered the book, I hadn’t expected that its content was covering so widely around as it actually is doing, and thereby the Glutathione being even more important for our health than I thought.

In the book, there are much scientific information, and some patient cases, often patients who came to him when their ordinary doctors nearly nothing knew about vitamins and minerals, or what they had done hadn’t helped. But the text is written in a helpful way, so easy to follow.

And there, concerning vitamins and minerals, to my wife, the doctors here in Chiang May again and again have told her that it’s dangerous to take vitamin each day in the week, and besides newer have mentioned a word about vitamins and minerals in connection to a sickness or a surgery.

Throughout the book in connection to all of the health problem cases we are getting lists we the good daily supplements of vitamins and minerals to take, as the body then need more than normally, and some of it which especially will be helpful for the cure.

Besides what we can see in the contents, we for example in the chapters also read about AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetic, heart disease, lupus erythematosus, memory loss, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, white blood cells, and more.

And besides in the chapter 3 concerning environmental illness, we are getting much good information about the bad aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and nickel, how to take care and what to do against them.

All together at fantastic good book concerning how to take care about the health.

This is one of the better "preventative" books I've read. The author's explaination of how GSH works in your body is very easy to understand.
Folks, who worry about hereditary disease, or who are left with no "medical" solutions should read this.

It will make more sense if the author provided weather zones. For example, it would have been helpful if a table was included that shows: 4 or 5 different regions, elevation, temperature during cultivation, etc. if I am from a different part of the world I can compare my data to a certain region in Italy.

I was a server at the Hamlet for several years in the 90's after the Lewis' sold the chain. I heard a lot of cool stories about them but never got a chance to meet them. After reading the book I feel like I have.

Are you hungry for HAMBURGER HAMLET? Here is the book. The history of HAMBURGER HAMLET as created by Harry & Marilyn Lewis. I'm hungry and ready to drive to the closest one! Or maybe better yet, to a Kate Mantilini or the Gardens on Glendon still the home of the Lewis' cuisine.

& yes her life as Cardinale is also well covered in this story

a great read - now go get that HAMBURGER ( a #9 or a #11 ? which one?? it must be rare-yum)
