About the Author
Susan M. Brookhart, Ph.D., is an independent educational consultant and author based in Helena, Montana. Dr. Brookhart's interests include the role of both formative and summative classroom assessment in student motivation and achievement, the connection between classroom assessment and large-scale assessment, and grading. She was the 2007-2009 editor of Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, a journal of the National Council on Measurement in Education. She is author or co-author of 16 books and more than 60 articles and book chapters on classroom assessment,teacher professional development, and evaluation. She serves on the editorial boards of several journals.

Level 1 (the Descriptive modeling subclass of BPMN 2.0) is a palette of shapes and symbols largely carried over from traditional flowcharting.� Level 2 (the Analytic subclass) expands the palette to be able to describe event-triggered behavior, critical to modeling exception handling.

The book explains the real meaning of BPMN's most basic concepts - like activity, process, and end state - essential to using the language correctly, and provides a step-by-step methodology for going from a blank page to a complete end-to-end BPMN model, developed from the top down in a hierarchical structure.� From the top-level diagram you can see on a single page exactly how the process starts, its possible end states, what the instance represents, and communications with the Customer, service providers, and other processes.� From there you can drill down to see the details of any part of the process.

Thie popular first edition of this book was published in 2009 based on the draft BPMN 2.0 specification.� This second edition is based on the final BPMN 2.0 specification.� Although the diagram elements have changed little since the first edition, both the methodology and style sections have been completely rewritten.

The second half of the book, the BPMN Implementer's Guide, is completely new.� It puts the focus on the XML serialization of the diagram, for both non-executable and executable process models.� It details the BPMN 2.0 metamodel and XML Schema, and describes the BPMN-I Profile, a set of serialization rules that facilitate interchange of BPMN models in the Analytic subclass between tools.� It also explains how BPMN 2.0 describes execution-related details, such as process data and data mapping, services, messages, and human task assignment, illustrated with an example executable process created in Bonita Open Solution.� It concludes with guidelines for implementers on how to align executable design with business-oriented top-down process modeling.

The book is lavishly illustrated with over 100 BPMN diagrams, and the BPMN Implementer's Guide section contains many XML examples as well.

Good content but major editorial issues with the Kindle version

I haven't finished reading the book yet, but the content is sound and very useful to acquire that practical experience on how to structure and define conventions for your enterprise' business processes. Overall, definitively a book worth reading.

However, I am pretty disappointed with the Kindle version - and in fact I am considering asking for a refund:

the figures are too compressed and the symbols, and in particular the labels, are illegible!!!!

This is a major issue because the diagrams are very important to follow the text and are useful for a quick post-reading review of the entire book.

It's a real pity that they fell so short in the Kindle version after the author has put so much effort into the content.

The author's content does a great job of laying out BPMN for the reader. However, the images in the Kindle version are very grainy and of poor quality. They are readable, but could be so much cleaner. However, thenKindle price is significantly lower making this a fantastic bargain.

This is a great book to learn using BPMN 2.0 correctly, it analyzes several items by examples. If you have any doubt about BPMN, this book has the answer. However in this Kindle version, the quality of images is poor, it should improve.

Great Study Tool!

I am a hands on, visual learner so these were perfect for me. I chose these over the phone app because again I learn better with something tangible to look at and write on. I love that they include a small ring so that you can divide out the section you want to focus on. I can throw them in my bag and study wherever I am. Some of the wording is a little different from what I was taught, but in a way that is good since we have no idea what the boards might be like. Overall I think these were worth the money.

Realistic scenes of 19th century working-class life by French genre painter Francoise Duparc were revolutionary for her time. Ranging from the Italian Fede Galizia, a pioneer of still-life painting, to American sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and photorealist Audrey Flack, this survey scans the contributions of scores of women artists whose works generally have been neglected or downplayed. Among the histories of women artists currently available, this one stands out for its unsurpassed color reproductions. Heller, who lectures on art in Washington, D.C., writes here about the obstacles creative women have faced from the Renaissance to the present.

YA None of the three major surveys of art history (Jansen, Gardner, Hartt) pays adequate attention to women artists of note. Heller's book is a successful attempt to begin to remedy this gap in basic information available to lay readers about women painters and sculptors since the Renaissance. Organized in six chapters by century, the survey provides brief biographical information, some critical analysis and context, and at least one color plate of the work of 125 women artists who lived and worked in Europe or North America between the 16th Century and the 1980s. Although the prose suffers from the problems inherent in a survey texttoo much information too quickly presentedthat problem is also a strength of the volume. Readers will be fascinated to discover these relatively obscure but competent or great artists who remained unknown because they were women. This book is an excellent introduction to women artists throughtout the ages. I discovered some I had never heard of before and as a result bought other books to learn more. The only regrets I have is that it omitted some very interesting painters, like Tamara de Lempicka, and the section on contemporary artists was too heavy on US artists. Otherwise excellent with great illustrations.

Encyclopaedia of Women Artists

I wanted a encyclopaedia like of women artists and this comes close to it. It is not all inclusive but it has a good number of entries, including the well known ones and the not so well known. I wish it had had more international women artists. I like the fact that it had good color illustrations. I am glad it is included in my art library. It is a good bargain for the price. This is a reference book.

Great first art book!

This is the first art book I ever read and really enjoyed it.

The book includes sort of mini-bios of each artist with descriptions of her artwork and one representative illustration. I noticed details of each artists' work that I probably would not have noticed on my own, and the book made me want to look up a number of the artists in order to see the rest of their works - and to me, this is indicative of a good book - one they leads you on to want to know more!

About the Author
Federico Carpi, Pisa 1975, received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering, the Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering and a second Laurea degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2001, 2005 and 2008, respectively. From 2000 to 2012, he has been with the University of Pisa, Interdepartmental Research Centre “E. Piaggio”, School of Engineering, Italy. Since 2012, he serves as a Reader in Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials at Queen Mary University of London, School of Engineering and Materials Science.
Dr Carpi is the Programme Director of the MSc in Medical Electronics and Physics and he is a member of the Institute of Bioengineering at Queen Mary College.
Further, he is the President of “EuroEAP – European Society for Electromechanically Active Polymer Transducers & Artificial Muscles” (organizing the annual 'EuroEAP’) and he coordinates the 'European Scientific Network for Artificial Muscles - ESNAM, focused on transducers and artificial muscles based on electroactive polymers.
His main research focus is on biomedical & bioinspired mechatronic devices made of soft smart materials.
He is an Editorial Board member of four international journals, and member of the scientific committees of several conferences. His publications include some 60 articles in international journals, 2 edited books and several contributions to books and conferences.
