In this exciting and challenging work, Norman Long brings together years of work and thought in development studies to provide a key text for guiding future development research and practice.
Using case studies and empirical material from Africa and Latin America, Development Sociology focuses on the theoretical and methodological foundations of an actor-oriented and social constructionist form of analysis. This style of analysis is opposed to the traditional structuralist/institutional analysis which is often applied in development studies.
With an accessible mix of general debate, critical literature reviews and original case study materials this work covers a variety of key development issues. Among many important topics discussed, the author looks at commoditisation, small-scale enterprise and social capital, knowledge interfaces, networks and power, globalisation and localisation as well as policy formulation and planned intervention processes.
This book should be read for its desire to pursue a form of analysis that helps us to understand better (and more realistically) the kinds of development interventions and social transformations that have characterised the second half of the twentieth century and will no doubt continue to characterise future development studies.

very good....but needs an editor
By ingonyama
This is a very useful collection / reconfiguration of Norman Long's writings on development, updating his earlier thought in relation to more recent literature and social theory, and offering both a useful antidote to overly Foucauldian writings on the topic, and insights on the relation between structure and agency, and processes of state formation, that go well beyond the study of development. But it really needs an editor -- the chapters have been constructed from prior texts in ways that seem haphazard -- for example, p. 64 repeats an entire paragraph more or less verbatim from p. 62, likewise p.45 and p. 41.

This is a unique book. For me it has two special contributions. One is to help people understand the actor approach but the second ( more valuable in my view) are the case studies that illustrate the complexity of development in the field.

new perspective but not conservative
By Sangseok Moon
this book shows a new perspective for social movement to make our world better. macro-sociological perspectives including Mark and Durkheim have been good to understand our society. If we are planning to change the world better, however, we are forced to stop at a step on how to let people participate in and act. This book is giving us a starting point to think the problem of social movement.
