If you can read only 1 book read this one. Common sense "truths" gleaned from a lifetime of successful fundraising. Not zen-like or mystical. But practical down to earth advice. Easy to read a few pages and come away with something.

If it wasn't so good, I'd balk at the price.

Great intro to Fundraising Basics

I read this book because I was under consideration for a position with a non-profit after years in the banking field. It was a great read filled with useful short insights and was extremely helpful in preparing for multiple interviews. The writer is clearly an expert fundraiser, but he is also a great writer with a quirky sense of humor I found very enjoyable. It's the kind of book that you can reference for quick ideas and insights over a long period of time, regardless of your experience level. I will be seeking out more books from this author.

I'm researching fund-raising because I want to raise money for a nerd camp I attended as a kid that lost funding in 2009. This book had a helpful list of donor motivations to elucidate why people donate money, reasons I found to be in line with why I give. The ideas all seemed solid and were pretty abstract and qualitative, so you need to figure out a lot on your own.

A great starting point, with an especially helpful bibliography for further reading. As a museum professional I recommend this book often to new employees and others trying to learn how to go about branding their institutions - a necessary good/evil(?) today.

A delightful start

Wallace's work was the first book to be included in my selected bibliography in my master's thesis. Despite the fact that some of the material needs a serious social media and beyond perspective, it gives a fantastic basis for Web 2.0 communication written for an administrator.
I loved her easy to understand writing style.
Her section on university museums is spot on. It's a training ground with a demographic that is easily recruitable. The amount of money left on the table, an underlying theme, is staggering with museums unwilling to shed 19th century notions of themselves, not to mention 20th century perceptions.

It's a shame the book is so expensive. It's a great foundation for future rebranding efforts at all museums, which will be required soon.

Hopefully another printing and update will lower the price and keep the entire book relevant.

Howard Sasportas, who died in 1992, was an American who spent his last 20 years in London. His reputation as one of the world's leading astrologers is unparalleled. A classic psychological work on the astrological houses

This is as close as anything gets to a definitive treatment of the twelve houses in modern astrology, although there is of course quality stuff scattered through many other books, including the excellent "The Gods Of Change", also by Howard Sasportas. As the author journeys through the houses, there are profound psychological insights for both the beginner and the more experienced astrologer.
The format is straightforward. An introductory section ("a person's reality springs outward from his or her inner landscape of thoughts, feelings, expectations and beliefs"), a quick journey through the houses, and then on to the majority of the book which is given over to a "cookbook" treatment of all the planets and signs in each house. There are countless examples backing up the interpretations e.g. writers and communicators with Sun in the third house, a famous musician and a poet with Neptune in the tenth house and so on.
At the end of the book there is a handy summary of the key concepts for each house, and a look at the different house systems astrologers use. Sasportas finishes the main text with the question, "Why don't you become what only you can become?". Why not indeed!? An excellent book.

Howard Sasportas' book, The Twelve Houses, is a must for any suitable study of Astrology. Such a basic subject as the areas (houses) of life must be thoroughly researched, and this book adds much to one's understanding of each planetary place- ment, & it also has some basic info on Chiron placements, & the moon's nodes. A good overview is given of the houses as process, plus aspects between the houses, & much more (valuable) information! A great reference book for beginners and intermediate students of Astrology!

The best book on houses you will find

The 12 Houses is my favorite book on houses and i have read many. I use this book as my main reference guide for houses for all my consultations and I have found it to be accurate, detailed and very comprehensive.
All the planetary placements by house are described here and very well, with a deep psychological profile as well as examples and facts. I love this book because although fairly simple in its structure ( it looks after all just any other astrology cookbook on houses), the psychology and insight are excellent. It is after all the work of the great Howard Sasportas, such an influencial british astrologer. This is the man that worked for so long side by side with Liz Green and , if I remember well, co-founder of the CPA in London. A non ordinary book from an non-ordinary man, I thoughroughly recommend this book, as you will find it such a valuable tool in your astrologiucal work.

very good....but needs an editor

This is a very useful collection / reconfiguration of Norman Long's writings on development, updating his earlier thought in relation to more recent literature and social theory, and offering both a useful antidote to overly Foucauldian writings on the topic, and insights on the relation between structure and agency, and processes of state formation, that go well beyond the study of development. But it really needs an editor -- the chapters have been constructed from prior texts in ways that seem haphazard -- for example, p. 64 repeats an entire paragraph more or less verbatim from p. 62, likewise p.45 and p. 41.

If we are planning to change the world better, however, we are forced to stop at a step on how to let people participate in and act. This book is giving us a starting point to think the problem of social movement.

• Syntax Highlighting. This book uses five-way syntax highlighting to emphasize Visual Basic .NET programming elements in a manner similar to that of Visual Studio .NET. Our syntax-highlighting conventions are as follows:

• "Code Washing." This is our term for the process we use to format the book's programs so that they have a carefully commented, open layout. The code is grouped into small, well-documented pieces. • Web Forms, Web Controls, and ASP .NET. The .NET platform enables developers to create robust, scalable Web-based applications. Microsoft's .NET server-side technology, Active Server Pages (ASP) .NET, allows programmers to build Web documents that respond to client requests. This book helps you get up to speed on VB .NET quickly

I recently finished reading Visual Basic .NET for Experienced Programmers by Deitel, Deitel, Nieto, and Yaeger, and found it to be very well written and a great tool to learn Visual Basic .NET. The book covers all the important aspects of Visual Basic .NET (the IDE, object-oriented approach, graphical user interface, multithreading, XML, ADO .NET, ASP .NET and Web services, and the mobile Internet) in approximately 1000 pages - quite a feat. Each chapter contains several entire programs ('Live-code examples') and thorough explanations of the code, to illustrate the concepts covered in the chapter. Some of the sample programs are fun, such as dice, tic tac toe, and blackjack games. The book provides clear explanations of why and how things works (chapters on ASP .NET - chapters 17 and 18 - are especially good at making the complexities make sense). The authors also emphasize the terminology of object-oriented programming (explaining terms such as composition, self-referential classes, and abstract data types).
The only minor complaint I have about the book is that it doesn't provide any programming assignments (except for one small task) for the reader.
Although I haven't read other books on Visual Basic .NET (other than approximtely 100 pages of Balena's Visual Basic .NET Core Reference - which I found tedious), I feel that by reading and studying the Deitel book you will gain a solid base of knowledge about Visual Basic .NET.

Terrific VB.NET book-- explores both Technical&Programming

This book is intended for experienced programmers. I enjoy this book because of its wide-spread detailed coverage of all advanced topics in a realistic approach. Apart from that the 559 illustrations and figures help every one to get a clear picture about the concept. The way of presenting the matter in the book is excellent. Nice work!
Using the .NET Framework, Microsoft Visual Basic developers can build robust applications that were very difficult to write in previous versions of Visual Basic. This book provides all the essentials of VB.NET with example-rich practical manner.
In Particular the explanation about Object-oriented Programming concepts, GUI concepts, Multithreading, ADO.NET, ASP.NET and ASP.NET Web Services is outstanding.
The usage of wireless applications is rising rapidly. Within few years, the number of people browsing the Web from wireless devices will exceed the number browsing from desktop computers. This book provides all the details about the Mobile Internet Tool Kit. They introduce mobile Web controls and mobile Web Forms that can be used to create ASP .NET applications that target a wide range of mobile devices. different kind of vb book - ok for beginers too

Its really not that advanced and does a very thorough review of basic programming concepts.

It does have that wordy textbook feel to it, which makes you wonder what happend to the questions at the end of the chapter. But its thorough and really gives you a good understanding of the VB language if you've never done any VB programming.

Good or bad, it spends most of the first 8 chapters programing in console, no fun GUIs till chapters 9 and 10. Which is a bit odd as most of the VB books I peeked at jump right into the GUI. This may make it boring for those of us who are "visual learners".
