Attorney Mitch Vilos, whose practice focuses on weapons cases, has discovered that the most serious and costly mistakes gun owners make result from a misunderstanding of the law of self-defense in their home states. The offenders include some of the nation's most intelligent, well-educated and well-trained individuals including accountants, pharmacists, business owners, police, gun-store owners and concealed weapon instructors. Don't expect to find this critical information on the Internet. Some states don't have self-defense statutes. Those that do have changed the meaning through case law and jury instructions that are extremely difficult for non- lawyers to understand. What is perfectly legal in one state could result in a murder conviction in another. In this one-of-a-kind book, statutes, cases and jury instructions that comprise the law of self-defense are illustrated by real-life cases and "Plain Talk" summaries that are extremely easy to understand. Common misconceptions that can lead to prison time and bankruptcy are revealed. Discover the presumptions and lower legal thresholds that could give you a split second tactical advantage during a violent attack. Every person who owns a weapon for self-defense or who has training in the martial arts should own this book.

Comprehensive AND easy to read
By JMDinGa
I wish I had come across this book much sooner - no, have not been arrested or ever had to use my concealed gun, fortunately. But anyone who "carries" should read this book. I have kept a brief summary of key carry laws for my state in my wallet for all of the years I have carried a concealed weapon. But, this book is an eye-opener regarding many pitfalls that could at the least cost you a lot of money, and at worst destroy your life. I sort of knew in the back of my mind that one really needs to be aware of things that may not be quite so visible on the surface of the law. Vilos has not only provided an excellent summary of carry law in every state with easy-to-understand commentary, he has incorporated the study of case histories that yields a far better insight into what can actually happen.
It's been a long time since grad school - I have not taken as many notes as with this book since then. I fully intend to go back and study every item I highlighted. I highly recommend this well written book. If you CCW, this is essential reading.

Tremendously Useful, But ...
By Fred Woodbridge
I vacillated between four and five stars for this little, but quite useful book.
There were a few stylistic points that caused a few groans in the reading, but nothing serious and certainly nothing that detracts from the information it provides. The reader will be pleased with the clearly ordinary language used to discuss what can be a complex collection of legal concepts around the array of American self-defense laws. That Vilos undertakes the task is to be commended, considering the veritable jungle of state and federal laws. Not content with sticking to H. sapiens, we're even treated to a discussion of self-defense laws re U. arctos (the Grizzly bear) and C. familiaris (dogs)!
When I say the information is clearly laid out, I'm being literal. Using tables, links to different state statute websites, and so on, one is pleased to see that some serious research has taken place and pains have been taken to explain them. Salient points keep being reiterated to underscore and highlight their importance. Self-defense *thinking* (ie. thought processing) is explained, to minimize the chances that a citizen who has acted in self-defense will end up in court, paying through the nose for what they supposed was a clear-cut case. Vilos takes every opportunity to highlight, point out, underscore legal points so much that it feels a little like badgering the reader. Yes, that was a joke; I took the author's example in so doing. And yes, that joke is just as hokey as those you'll find in the book.
Now the crux of the book: how do all these laws translate into practice? Vilos shines here. He points out how laws are actually made, and how, with cases being tried, they actually are interpreted and thus practically changed. Taking you from house to courtroom, the author sets the proper tone: it is not enough that one understand the statutes in play, but also how they're applied in your particular state.
My one gripe with the book is that, after several (13, 14?) chapters of harping on the points surround self-defense, Vilos essentially throws that out in a feverish regurgitation of a University's Women's Studies curriculum when he addresses Battered Women's Syndrome. On pain of criminal prosecution, he says, ensure you do not act in self-defense long after the injury has occurred and the threat is over. He defines and explains again and again the legal concept of imminence. Then, as if to throw all that out of the window, he writes urging the states to accept a tale of self-defense when a woman, hours after a beating, points a revolver in the face of her sleeping abuser and pulls the trigger, splattering his brains all over the bed. I'm sorry, but self-defense ought not care about the presence or absence of ovaries.
To his credit, he writes that a woman so abused ought to leave the abuser (this is good advice regardless of the sex!), get a gun, and an order of protection--which comes with its own set of caveats, paper can't protect against blows, for example.
Apart from this speed bump in the road, this book should be required reading for anyone who possess an instinct for self-preservation and the defense against violence both for themselves and others they cherish, which ensuring they do not get violated twice, the second time at the hands of an overzealous prosecutor.

Some questions
By John
I have a couple of questions. And yes, this book is quite good. I give it only 4 stars, because of my lingering doubts. Can you use deadly force against multiple attackers? Was the Zimmerman shooting justified? The authors make it seem like you can never use a weapon against unarmed attackers. But that contradicts what I have read. Why wasn't the Ferguson cop indicted? Because he was 195 pounds and attacked by at least one young man weighing 300+. That is disparity of force. The same with Zimmerman, where the shooter was having his head beat into the ground. But the authors give the impression (at least with me) that you should *never* use a weapon against someone unarmed, because you will lose in the courtroom. Ok, so why isn't that Ferguson cop in prison? Also, they need to go more into the "never talk to cops" thing. You have to talk to cops by being the first one to call 911 and then say something like "I was attacked at Smith Ave. and 7th Street. I feared for my life." When the cops get on the scene, you say "My gun is on my right hip. The attacker's weapon is over there." TALK TO POLICE until the arrest. Then clam up. They didn't say that, I think.
