This is where it all started! The first classic Phryne Fisher mystery, featuring our delectable heroine, cocaine, communism and adventure. Phryne leaves the tedium of English high society for Melbourne, Australia, and never looks back. The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honorable Phryne Fisher―she of the green-gray eyes, diamant garters and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositions―is rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men. Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia.
Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops and communism―not to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse―until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

Miss Fisher Mysteries (A Memorable Detective )
By K. Elizabeth Manning
This is a fun book to read. It's fast paced, interesting characters, very visual, and extremely interesting. I became interested in Miss Fisher mysteries because they were produced for television in Australia and I watched the author describe the books compared to the television series. The television series gave life to the characters. I have to say the books are a fun & interesting read. I enjoy the main character, Phyrne Fisher, a bold and interesting woman, completely feminine and fearless. She's clever, innovative, and perceptive. She's a woman that lives in the moment, but she's always ahead of the game. She is a detective, she has a task, she considers her options, her course of action, and what she needs to do to solve the issue at hand, and who she needs to bring with her to achieve that goal. She has an uncanny knack for evaluating human nature, who she can trust, and who should not be trusted. I enjoyed reading how she selected individuals that she brought into her circle, each one selected for their strength & ability in an specific area. Above all they were ordinary with an uncanny sense of human values. Each one could be trusted with as they were also bold and fearless in their own way. This was essential because at some point their actions would determine the outcome of the mystery. In this story it was about the search for the "King of Snow", the individual that was behind the sale of cocaine. The secondary mystery was to find the individual who was doing illegal abortions & risking the lives of young women who sought the services. One of the main characters was a woman doctor, an essential ally in both situations . The setting is in the 1920's and the descriptions of the businesses, the transportation, the life styles, and especially the attitudes of the time as seen through the vision of the opulent & wealthy. They create the image of perfection, but the reality of their world can be ruthless as they devise the means to acquire their wealth without regard to human life, or regard for individuals caught in their traps. The other side of the story is someone like Miss Fisher who moves seamlessly between both worlds. She sees with an uncanny awareness of who will do what and when, and that's when she goes into action and like a chess game each player makes their move and her wisdom & intelligence gets her in and out of situations, seemingly unscathed, & the finer aspects of the human condition win while those with lesser, more evil intentions lose. Then she's off to her next exciting situation to solve or resolve. She is an example of the only way to live is to be on the present moment, the past is for assessment and the future isn't considered until the present is resolved.

The Roaring Twenties, Down Under Version
By Nyssa
The Honorable Phryne Fisher is asked by one of her father's high society friends, Colonel Harper, to pop down to Australia to check up on his daughter, Lydia. Ever since she married an Australian and moved to Melbourne, her health has been a concern and has recently taken a turn for the worse again for no apparent reason. Perhaps Miss Fisher could go to Melbourne and make a few discrete inquiries to make certain that Lydia's new husband, Mr. Andrews, is not somehow responsible with hopes of inheriting his wife's legacy of fifty thousand pounds.
After devouring Greenwood's mysteries in her Corinna Chapman series, I was looking forward to starting this series of books since it takes place in the same locale of Melbourne, just in a different time. Unfortunately, I found the main character of Phryne Fisher to be unlikable and in many ways just too unbelievably perfect at everything she does.
In some ways Phryne is like a distaff version of Lord Peter Wimsey, a bored daughter of a wealthy aristocrat who dabbles in many hobbies including figuring out puzzles and mysteries. Yet the reader is told that her family had been dirt poor and struggling in Australia for years before her father inherited his title and wealth from a distant family connection and then whisked off to England into the good life. Even with the late start, she has become an expert at flying an airplane, driving a race car, and fluent in French plus gathering all of the knowledge of fine wines, travels, and fashion expected of young lady of the aristocracy.
The mystery presented can be solved along with Phryne with plenty of clues for the reader to follow. Much of the action takes place in locations or situations that would be considered shady or part of the underground, hidden society. This is not the upbeat, clean world of a cozy mystery, so readers who are expecting one should probably steer clear of this book.
Mildly recommended only for those readers who don't mind a spoiled, bored rich woman as a main character or going for a look into the dark side of 1928 Melbourne.

TV Series is Better
By Springlering
Well, here's something that those who know me would never expect to pass my lips: The TV series is better.
We started watching the excellent Australian TV series on the Acorn channel thinggy we have have via Roku. I ain't hatin' but Essie Davis simply burns up the screen as Phryne Fisher. I mean to say, she absolutely sizzles.
I'm always in the market for a good mystery series, so naturally I looked it up. Amazon has the first book (this one) available for free, I immediately downloaded it. Let's just put it kindly: the screenwriters did the old chop-chop to the book. Only in this case, by making it nearly unrecognizeable, they vastly improved it.
Now I understand that the first book in any series is usually the weakest, but this one is so weak, it just had me scratching my head. Childishly written, annoying characters (who were outstanding on the series, btw), and honestly, kind of a stupid plot (again, much improved on by the televised series). The "action" parts were dull and boring, and Phryne, instead of being the crackerjack she was on TV, seemed to flounder. I was relieved to finish the book up, since I am one of those readers who, once started, feels obligated to finish.
Maybe the book series improves as it goes along, but I'm just not going to take that chance. Treat yourself to an awesome TV series, but spare yourself the books. There, I said it, and now I'm going to go wash my mouth out with soap and find a good book to take the taste away....
