Awesome book

This book was bought as a gift for my uncle who is an avid collector of "sharp" weapons. When he called to thank me for it, I could hear the excitement in his voice as he told me how much he loved it. This book is a great reference tool as well as a beautiful coffee table book. I highly recommend it!

About the Author

Rael Isacowitz is a world-renowned practitioner and teacher of Pilates. With over three decades of Pilates practice and achievement, he is a prominent lecturer and teacher at symposia, universities, colleges, and studios around the globe. He received his bachelor of education degree and teaching credentials from Israel's prestigious Wingate Institute, where he subsequently joined the teaching faculty. He later earned a master of arts degree in dance from the University of Surrey, England.

Rael’s early Pilates teachers included Alan Herdman and thereafter several of the first-generation Pilates teachers (known as the Elders), including Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, Romana Kryzanowska, Eve Gentry, and Lolita San Miguel.

Rael has mastered all levels of the Pilates repertoire and is noted in the industry for his unique athleticism; synthesis of body, mind, and spirit; and passion for teaching. In 1989 he founded Body Arts and Science International (BASI) Pilates, which has developed into one of the foremost Pilates education organizations in the world. BASI Pilates is currently taught in more than 100 locations spanning 30 countries.

Rael’s first edition of Pilates (Human Kinetics, 2006) and his Pilates Anatomy (coauthored with Karen Clippinger, Human Kinetics, 2011) have received worldwide acclaim and been translated into multiple languages. 2nd edition is even more complete than the first. I wrote a review for the first edition and continue to be amazed at Rael Isacowitz ability to teach through words. He is a master at what he produces in books and teaching.

Typos and grammatical errors are now so common in e-books that it seems a waste of energy to whine about it. Yes, they're here, too. Does anyone edit or proofread any more?

I enjoyed this "everyman" pilot's life story, but I have two complaints about the book. Firstly, there is a lot of discussion using terms that will go right over anyone without any understanding of aviation lingo. Though I'm only a lowly private pilot, I understood what he was getting at by such things as "intercepting the localiser" and the dangers of flying at very high altitudes. Without explanations these will make little sense to readers unversed in the jargon of flying.

Secondly, the man seems to have been under the impression that the airlines were there to fulfill his needs as a pilot, bachelor, or family man, rather than the other way around. He frequently got into a snit about some real or imagined slight, then ran off looking for another job. Clearly he saw no benefit to loyalty to an employer. In an era when young folks have a terrible time breaking into the ranks of professional pilots because it is so difficult to build the hours of experience required, I found it somewhat annoying that this guy found it so easy to bounce from airline to airline And that is what this book is mostly about: "How I made a career out of a bunch of short stints as a pilot". There was little insight from the author as to the impacts of his behavior on others.

The conclusion was unexpected, and offers some resolution. That's why I offered it a third star.

A good story of what it is like as a pilot, but I would have like to have read more about his wife's take on this unsteeled life. Stephen PcKinnell certainly shows that it isn't all glamour and prestige. perhaps it is as well that we don't know the half of what goes on behind the scenes.

My work as an educational consultant made me aware of the many families needing information in order to make the best choices for their children regarding education. �I did the research over a two-year period, interviewing parents, students, and teachers involved in the seven major types of education available in the US. �These interviews were then analyzed for repeated content, and representative stories were highlighted in the book to make the data more memorable. �The book also contains guiding questions for evaluating various educational settings and the needs of individual children. �I've tried to package what I do as an educational consultant and offer it in book form -- for about 1/5 of what you would pay to talk to me for an hour. �Happy studies!

We have twins about to enter school age and have been trying to look at our options. This book really helped me understand the variety of choices out there, and the differences between them. I liked reading the stories about each families experiences and the resources she included were very helpful. This is a must read if you have school age kids.

The most underappreciated element of film as an art form (at least in academic film criticism) may well be acting; this collection, by four scholars (three at the University of Michigan, one at the University of Southern California), attempts to redress that imbalance by drawing on the words of those who practice the craft. According to Ronald Gottesman, this volume has been 25 years in the making, no doubt because so few actors of earlier generations have been inclined to intellectualize their profession. Indeed, it may well be that actors are by temperament and inclination not the best people to hold forth on how they do what they do. Certainly, a great deal in this volume suggests as much. The book consists of 42 pieces spanning nearly all of film history, from a reminiscence of acting in a 1912 silent by obscure British actor Charles Graham, to lengthy dialogues with the likes of Jack Nicholson and Robert DeNiro. These contributions are linked together, sometimes rather awkwardly, by Leigh Woods, who attempts to supply historical context for them. Some themes are sounded repeatedly: the difference between stage and screen; the difficulties inherent in working in bits and pieces, as one does in film; the relationship between personality and persona; keeping a perspective on craft after stardom rears its head. Many of the entries contain nuggets of interesting observation. Laurence Olivier offers an intriguing note on how film acting taught him to use his eyes more effectively onstage. Hume Cronyn contributes a useful checklist for building a part. Jack Lemmon compares acting to undergoing psychoanalysis. But much of the volume is tedious, repetitive, or outdated. Amazing insight, once you get past the Brit-lit doggerel.

Playing to the Camera only wishes it was as academic as its editors would have you believe. Between long-winded, professorial previews of each subject lies fascinating first-person accounts of an ever-evolving medium. You hear from silent greats like Louise Brooks--her interview alone is worth the price of the book--to modern stars like Streep and the rest. What you see is that the more film technology changes, the more it stays the same. The actors, technicians all, bare their trained souls and share their insights into film acting.
