About the Author
Susan M. Brookhart, Ph.D., is an independent educational consultant and author based in Helena, Montana. Dr. Brookhart's interests include the role of both formative and summative classroom assessment in student motivation and achievement, the connection between classroom assessment and large-scale assessment, and grading. She was the 2007-2009 editor of Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, a journal of the National Council on Measurement in Education. She is author or co-author of 16 books and more than 60 articles and book chapters on classroom assessment,teacher professional development, and evaluation. She serves on the editorial boards of several journals.

Level 1 (the Descriptive modeling subclass of BPMN 2.0) is a palette of shapes and symbols largely carried over from traditional flowcharting.� Level 2 (the Analytic subclass) expands the palette to be able to describe event-triggered behavior, critical to modeling exception handling.

The book explains the real meaning of BPMN's most basic concepts - like activity, process, and end state - essential to using the language correctly, and provides a step-by-step methodology for going from a blank page to a complete end-to-end BPMN model, developed from the top down in a hierarchical structure.� From the top-level diagram you can see on a single page exactly how the process starts, its possible end states, what the instance represents, and communications with the Customer, service providers, and other processes.� From there you can drill down to see the details of any part of the process.

Thie popular first edition of this book was published in 2009 based on the draft BPMN 2.0 specification.� This second edition is based on the final BPMN 2.0 specification.� Although the diagram elements have changed little since the first edition, both the methodology and style sections have been completely rewritten.

The second half of the book, the BPMN Implementer's Guide, is completely new.� It puts the focus on the XML serialization of the diagram, for both non-executable and executable process models.� It details the BPMN 2.0 metamodel and XML Schema, and describes the BPMN-I Profile, a set of serialization rules that facilitate interchange of BPMN models in the Analytic subclass between tools.� It also explains how BPMN 2.0 describes execution-related details, such as process data and data mapping, services, messages, and human task assignment, illustrated with an example executable process created in Bonita Open Solution.� It concludes with guidelines for implementers on how to align executable design with business-oriented top-down process modeling.

The book is lavishly illustrated with over 100 BPMN diagrams, and the BPMN Implementer's Guide section contains many XML examples as well.

Good content but major editorial issues with the Kindle version

I haven't finished reading the book yet, but the content is sound and very useful to acquire that practical experience on how to structure and define conventions for your enterprise' business processes. Overall, definitively a book worth reading.

However, I am pretty disappointed with the Kindle version - and in fact I am considering asking for a refund:

the figures are too compressed and the symbols, and in particular the labels, are illegible!!!!

This is a major issue because the diagrams are very important to follow the text and are useful for a quick post-reading review of the entire book.

It's a real pity that they fell so short in the Kindle version after the author has put so much effort into the content.

Great content, poor production

The author's content does a great job of laying out BPMN for the reader. However, the images in the Kindle version are very grainy and of poor quality. They are readable, but could be so much cleaner. However, thenKindle price is significantly lower making this a fantastic bargain.

This is a great book to learn using BPMN 2.0 correctly, it analyzes several items by examples. If you have any doubt about BPMN, this book has the answer. However in this Kindle version, the quality of images is poor, it should improve.

Great Study Tool!

I am a hands on, visual learner so these were perfect for me. I chose these over the phone app because again I learn better with something tangible to look at and write on. I love that they include a small ring so that you can divide out the section you want to focus on. I can throw them in my bag and study wherever I am. Some of the wording is a little different from what I was taught, but in a way that is good since we have no idea what the boards might be like. Overall I think these were worth the money.

Realistic scenes of 19th century working-class life by French genre painter Francoise Duparc were revolutionary for her time. Ranging from the Italian Fede Galizia, a pioneer of still-life painting, to American sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and photorealist Audrey Flack, this survey scans the contributions of scores of women artists whose works generally have been neglected or downplayed. Among the histories of women artists currently available, this one stands out for its unsurpassed color reproductions. Heller, who lectures on art in Washington, D.C., writes here about the obstacles creative women have faced from the Renaissance to the present.

YA None of the three major surveys of art history (Jansen, Gardner, Hartt) pays adequate attention to women artists of note. Heller's book is a successful attempt to begin to remedy this gap in basic information available to lay readers about women painters and sculptors since the Renaissance. Organized in six chapters by century, the survey provides brief biographical information, some critical analysis and context, and at least one color plate of the work of 125 women artists who lived and worked in Europe or North America between the 16th Century and the 1980s. Although the prose suffers from the problems inherent in a survey texttoo much information too quickly presentedthat problem is also a strength of the volume. Readers will be fascinated to discover these relatively obscure but competent or great artists who remained unknown because they were women. This book is an excellent introduction to women artists throughtout the ages. I discovered some I had never heard of before and as a result bought other books to learn more. The only regrets I have is that it omitted some very interesting painters, like Tamara de Lempicka, and the section on contemporary artists was too heavy on US artists. Otherwise excellent with great illustrations.

Encyclopaedia of Women Artists

I wanted a encyclopaedia like of women artists and this comes close to it. It is not all inclusive but it has a good number of entries, including the well known ones and the not so well known. I wish it had had more international women artists. I like the fact that it had good color illustrations. I am glad it is included in my art library. It is a good bargain for the price. This is a reference book.

Great first art book!

This is the first art book I ever read and really enjoyed it.

The book includes sort of mini-bios of each artist with descriptions of her artwork and one representative illustration. I noticed details of each artists' work that I probably would not have noticed on my own, and the book made me want to look up a number of the artists in order to see the rest of their works - and to me, this is indicative of a good book - one they leads you on to want to know more!

About the Author
Federico Carpi, Pisa 1975, received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering, the Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering and a second Laurea degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2001, 2005 and 2008, respectively. From 2000 to 2012, he has been with the University of Pisa, Interdepartmental Research Centre “E. Piaggio”, School of Engineering, Italy. Since 2012, he serves as a Reader in Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials at Queen Mary University of London, School of Engineering and Materials Science.
Dr Carpi is the Programme Director of the MSc in Medical Electronics and Physics and he is a member of the Institute of Bioengineering at Queen Mary College.
Further, he is the President of “EuroEAP – European Society for Electromechanically Active Polymer Transducers & Artificial Muscles” (organizing the annual 'EuroEAP’) and he coordinates the 'European Scientific Network for Artificial Muscles - ESNAM, focused on transducers and artificial muscles based on electroactive polymers.
His main research focus is on biomedical & bioinspired mechatronic devices made of soft smart materials.
He is an Editorial Board member of four international journals, and member of the scientific committees of several conferences. His publications include some 60 articles in international journals, 2 edited books and several contributions to books and conferences.

A beautiful end to The Love and Repair series =)

A bittersweet but yet hopeful close to Chelsea Camaron's Love & Repair series finally clues us in to what happened in Sophia's past that made her unable to fully give herself to Harrison (or anyone else). I wanted to cry during the first several pages because I could feel how much pain Sophia was going through as she gives birth to and then is forced to give up her son. A tender story about not giving up hope and learning that it really is never too late to make things right. Shorter than all the other books in this series but packs a powerful punch nonetheless!
If you've read the first 5 books you will definitely want to get this one to give you a real sense of closure. Lovely =)

Great Read!

I received a gifted copy from the author in exchange for my honest review, so her it is. Sophia has been living in hell for 14 years. After her son was taken away from her and she was not allowed any contact. It has set her live in motion and she doesn't get very close with anyone. When a surprise phone call comes, she is given another change at life. Will she see her son and will her son accept why she has been absent from his life all these years? Will Sophia get her HEA? This story will break your heart but it will let you see into Sophia's life and answer any questions you might have after reading Beyond Repair. This is the last of the Love and Repair series. if you haven't read any of Chelsea's stories yet, please start with this series, it is great.

I have enjoyed this series immensely, and have to admit I was sad when at the end of Beyond Repair there was no HEA for Sophie. I know Harrison wan’t the right one for her. Now I know why.

How do you move on when you lose the most important person in the world, on the same day you lose your first love? Well Sophie didn’t. She has kept herself in control and her heart locked up for 15 years. When her first love gives her a chance to have the life she always wanted she has to take that chance. And this reader is so thrilled she does!

Pieces of her life all finally come together and she is happy. She has a love she has always needed and the opportunity to make her own HEA. A perfect ending to a fantastic series.

The threats come from the schoolyard and from the home and highlight how dangerous it has become to be born with any differences whatsoever.

Along the way, the five students have to find common ground to bond and become first classmates, then friends, and finally, teammates as the X-Men. In this emotionally gripping story, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's creations are seen through a modern-day point of view courtesy of writer Joe Casey (Uncanny X-Men, Superman) and artists Steve Rude (Spider-Man: Lifelines, Nexus), Paul Smith (Uncanny X-Men), and Essad Ribic (Brotherhood).

Teens at risk...

Joe Casey and Steve "The Dude" Rude set out to tell the story of how those uncanny franchise-builders, the X-Men got together in the first place. Set just a few years ago, "Children of the Atom" features Professor Xavier setting up shop in a troubled high school, thanks to a helpful FBI agent. Anti-mutant gangs are on the rise, and a number of familiar youngsters are in danger. Shadows of Columbine definitely drape this book in darkness, but so, too, do other teen issues.

First, the flaws. In true comic book fashion, there's little subtlety to the villians this go around. Viewing an episode of "Jerry Springer" about racists would have sufficed for research. It would've added some depth if Casey had done more to indicate his young skinheads were as much at risk from their own hate as the young mutants are. The X-teens encounter skinheads who speak in a kind of adult-writer-attempts-youthful patois, and both Casey and Rude indulge in pop culture referencing and caricaturing in an attempt to layer the story, but only distract from the central players. In other words, Frank Miller already covered this territory way too often; give us something we've never seen before, go deeper into all the characters. Although in his defense, the always-amazing Rude gives some of the bit players some facial expressions that suggests he gets it.

Where the book succeeds is in adding a new layer of metaphor to its mutant mythology. The X-Books have long relied on the "anti-mutant hysteria" theme, usually depicted as a commentary on racism. Here, it's most evocative of teen homosexuality. After all, this is a story about seemingly average-looking people who hide their true natures in the face of a disapproving public. And while most of the demogogic antagonist Metzger's rhetoric is borrowed heavy-handedly from white supremacists (and his name!), it's readily apparent that's only part of what this story's addressing. Or looting for effect.

Not that any of the heroes in this story are shown as overtly gay (and Marvel history would suggest they aren't), but bits of dialogue between Professor X and the FBI agent seem to indicate the G-man might have a hidden, personal motivation for helping the Professor. Also, Hank McCoy, the Beast, has his mutant identity stripped bare in public, followed by the kind of reaction sexually confused young people have to face; McCoy is effectively "outted." It's during these scenes the story gains emotional resonance.

Eventually, as the story winds down, The Dude's wonderful "Dr. Seuss-meets-Jack Kirby" artwork gives way to some surprisingly disappointing pages from Paul Smith, and the story loses its racial/sexual subtext to become standard fare. By the time Essad Divac comes on board with some obviously rushed and frankly, bland art, we're involved in a cliched superhero battle, rendering something that began with much promise only average.

The Story that Made Them Be

It all began with a dream of peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. Forty years from now, the dream is still living on strong in the hands of comics creators and quite recently movie studios. The X-Men franchise is the most popular of all comic mythos and collectively has take on the like of the big guns like Superman and Batman. It all began with a simpe idea, that people wherever they are can live and coexist with others of a minority. Be it race, social status and age. Going back to how the dream began makes the person only fathom of how the X-Men have gone through their drastic changes to become the force in comics they are now.
Joe Casey weaves a good story at first on how he introduces his early mutants that made up Prof X's first batch of students, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman and Angel. Kids with the only difference from others is that they're different. Everyone who has ever been through the teen years feels that difference and you don't require the X-gene to know it. The story begins with the shadow of Columbine still looming over certain plot scenes. By the end, however, it seems that the story was rushed and the originality of the first three issues is lost on training, bickering and a dominating personality readers are not used to in Prof X's character. He's more of a school master than a father figure that he is these days. Even his restaurant confrontation with Magneto is anything but benign. He actually threatens to wedge a knife in the guy's brain. Are we talking about the same old, kind man of the early series. Not really. Casey, just fails to capture the essence of Xavier's dream.
The art also goes through this twist. Steve "the Dude" Rude is known to emulate greats such as Jack Kirby in his retro style art, but when the other fill in artists take over, it becomes another X-Men story and not the flashback to what is already being chunked out in the monthly series.
The book is good and you learn how these X-Men came to be. The best scenes include those with Magneto in them. That guy is great wherever he appears and no matter how many times Marvel tries to kill him, you have to admit, he's the best X-villain out there. It's a wonderful read for the first few issues, but then the story and art becomes eclectic and too out of track. Casey is a good writer, but needs to work more on his story contination. Rude is a bonafide genius. 'Nuff said!!!

This is a wonderful paperback which tells about how the first 5 X-men came to live with Xavier. Gives wonderful insight into all the characters. As a Scott fan I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about his childhood.
The X-men included in this book are: Hank, Bobby, Warren, Jean and Scott. Plus Xavier and Magneto.
