A Wolf Called Romeo, by Nick Jans

The unlikely true story of a six-year friendship between a wild, oddly gentle black wolf and the people and dogs of Juneau, Alaska No stranger to wildlife, Nick Jans had lived in Alaska for nearly thirty years. But when one evening at twilight a lone black wolf ambled into view not far from his doorstep, Nick would finally come to know this mystical species—up close as never before.

A Wolf Called Romeo is the remarkable story of a wolf who returned again and again to interact with the people and dogs of Juneau, living on the edges of their community, engaging in an improbable, awe-inspiring interspecies dance and bringing the wild into sharp focus. At first the people of Juneau were guarded, torn between shoot first, ask questions later instincts and curiosity. But as Romeo began to tag along with cross-country skiers on their daily jaunts, play fetch with local dogs, or simply lie near Nick and nap under the sun, they came to accept Romeo, and he them. For Nick it was about trying to understand Romeo, then it was about winning his trust, and ultimately it was about watching over him, for as long as he or anyone could.

Written with a deft hand and a searching heart, A Wolf Called Romeo is an unforgettable tale of a creature who defied nature and thus gave humans a chance to understand it a little more.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Jans was walking with his wife and yellow Lab in the gathering twilight when a black wolf they’d spotted on the frozen lake came bounding up near them. Forty yards away, he stopped, but then the Lab broke free and approached the wolf. The result of this encounter was a wild wolf that became part of the author’s life on the fringe of suburban Juneau, an animal not only tolerant of humans but also downright friendly to dogs. As he began to be known among the local dog owners, it became clear that Romeo truly was sociable—playing with dogs of all types, putting up with pursuit by photographers, and interacting with all levels of clueless people. For six years, this friendly wolf graced the Juneau wilderness, accompanying people on hikes and interacting with their dogs. Woven through Romeo’s story is the larger tale of humans and wolves, of close contact and fear, of wolves and dogs, and of an animal that lives both beyond and among us. As in Jans’ previous works (The Grizzly Maze, 2006; The Glacier Wolf, 2009), the writing is both lyrical and factual, and through Jans’ pen, we feel the crisp Alaska twilight and see the breeze ruffle Romeo’s black coat. --Nancy Bent

Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month

"Insightful and philosophical, Jans probes the boundaries between wilderness and civilization and our responsibilities to the untamed creatures in our midst." -- Publishers Weekly

"The sweet and cautionary tale of a wolf that liked to play with dogs...An astute, deeply respectful encounter between man and wolf." -- Kirkus Reviews

"Jans is an exceptional storyteller — no nature writer can top him in terms of sheer emotional force — and he frames even the smallest moment with haunting power." --The New York Times

"A thoughtful, highly detailed account of one community's poignant encounter with a truly magnificent creature."--BookPage

"Beautifully written, A Wolf Called Romeo is a thoughtful and moving story aboutone of nature's most evocative animals. Be forewarned: I read it cover to cover in one sitting late into the night. The author owes me a good night's sleep; but it was well worth it." -- Patricia McConnell, author of The Other End of the Leash

"The compelling, grounded account of a black wolf that stepped forward in the half-light between wilderness and civilization and the people who met him there. From the powerful first moments to a hard-won conclusion that becomes our journey, too, A Wolf Called Romeo is a book to keep a reader up nights, and a book that carries long after the last page is turned." -- Susannah Charleson, author of Scent of the Missing and The Possibility Dogs

"A Wolf Called Romeo is one of the best books I’ve read in a great many years. It gives heart-wrenching insight into an amazing animal, important insight into the shining side of our relationship with that animal, and important if bitter insight into the dark side. It’s told in a quiet, even-handed manner which makes it all the more compelling, and it’s riveting. In short, this is a real page turner-- one that years from now you will remember in all its detail. If you have only the time to read one book, read this one." --Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs and A Million Years With You

From the Inside Flap
The unlikely true story of a six-year friendship between a wild, oddly gentle black wolf and the people and dogs of Juneau, Alaska Nick Jans had lived in Alaska for nearly thirty years, as close as one could be to the wild. During that time he developed a particular, abiding fascination: wolves. Of course, mankind has long been entranced by these near-mythical creatures. But not until one evening at twilight, when a lone black wolf ambled into view not far from his own doorstep, did Nick Jans finally come to know the creature who had captured his imagination all those years up close as never before.

A Wolf Called Romeo is the remarkable story of a wolf who returned again and again to interact with the people and dogs of Juneau, living on the edges of their community, engaging in an improbable, awe-inspiring interspecies dance. At first the people of Juneau were guarded, torn between shoot-first-ask-questions-later instincts and curiosity. But as Romeo began to tag along with cross-country skiers on their daily jaunts, play fetch with local dogs, or simply lie and nap under the sun alongside his trusted human counterparts, they came to accept Romeo. For Nick, it was about trying to understand Romeo, then it was about winning his trust, and ultimately it was about watching over him, for as long as he or anyone could.

Written with a deft hand and a searching heart, A Wolf Called Romeo is an unforgettable tale of a creature who came in from the wild and gave humans a chance to understand it a little more. Part memoir, part moving animal narrative, part foray into the mystique, lore, science, and history of the wolf, A Wolf Called Romeo is a book no animal lover should miss."

THE BEST man-wild animal book I have EVER read. PERIOD.
By William Dahl
I ordered this book as a member of the Amazon Vine program. This story is a treasure. It’s a gift…a unique and wonderful journey.

My favorite, all-time man-dog book is Merle’s Door: Lessons from a Free-thinking Dog by Ted Kerasote.

Enter Nick Jans with his book entitled A Wolf Called Romeo. This is unequivocally THE BEST man-wild animal book I have EVER read. PERIOD.

Jans uses his life experience as an author, naturalist, experienced outdoorsman, investigative journalist and photographer to weave a wonderful story.

The essence of the book (for me) is characterized in the following excerpt:

“Running a Darwinian gauntlet that demanded constant adaptation and complex responses, with scant margin for error, he had accomplished what few large predators ever had, or will: he lived near, even among, thousands of humans over most of his life – not just a shadowed presence or camp follower,, but as an independent, socially interactive creature whose territory overlapped our own – without the benefit of a large-scale preserve. Through this time among us, he remained his own gatekeeper, his comings and goings defining the ever-shifting boundary between worlds, rendering our own surveys and markers meaningless.” (excerpt from page 185).

Like I said - THE BEST man-wild animal book I have EVER read. PERIOD. This book should be required reading for wildlife biology students and practitioners everywhere!!! When it comes to understanding the wolf ( I hike in northeastern Oregon - Eagle Cap Wilderness - where wolves are now becoming re-established ) hikers, civilians, researchers, ranchers, naturalists and environmentalists would ALL be well-served by consuming this work. BUY IT! READ IT! LEARN FROM IT! - as we have vastly more to learn about this creature - an its interaction with man (or man's interaction with the wolf).

Buy it! Savor it. Look for Nick Jans and go meet him at an author appearance. You’ll be blessed by this true story. I certainly was. I promise. PERIOD.

Highly recommend this beautiful book....
By History Buffs
It is not often I read a book I cannot put down....this is one of those books, and may be the best book I have ever read. It is beautifully written by Nick Jans with eloquence and love, and his photographs are stunning. Along the way, I fell in love with Romeo....everyone does. It is hard to imagine the contrast between this elegant and beloved wolf, who desired the company of humans and their dogs, and the evil in someone who could entertain the idea of taking Romeo's precious life. We surely all know there is much evil in this world, but Romeo's beautiful spirit lives on. I highly recommend this book for all ages....thank you, Mr. Jans, for this wonderful book and for sharing Romeo's life with us.

A Terrific Documentation of a Story that Needed to be Told
By Kerry Burkhardt
Nick does a fantastic job telling the story of Romeo while also educating the reader on wolf behavior and forcing the reader to evaluate our own behavior both as a society and as individuals. After reading the book, I feel indebted to Harry for investigating Romeo's demise and thereby giving him a chance at justice. I also feel grateful to Nick for committing the story to print so that we all can all share in the story of Romeo. But most of all, the story of Romeo makes me wish two things. First, that I had been there personally to experience that special black wolf, and second, that as a society we could eradicate ourselves of the evil constituents that choose to kill animals simply for sport. Gandhi said that the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it's animals are treated. A Wolf Called Romeo tells the story of those that would strive to make us better (Harry, Nick, and the other Friends of Romeo), and those that continue to hinder our progress.

If you’re wondering why you should buy this new edition of The Media of Mass Communication, here are 5 good reasons!

This is the most exciting time in human history to be studying mass media. So much is in flux. Although self-proclaimed gurus are everywhere, nobody knows for certain how the commotion will really settle. This new edition of The Media of Mass Communication will help you see why the media are in such a tumultuous transition and provide you with tools for understanding the reshaping of entire the media industry. Reflecting the transformations in the mass media, this 10th edition is the most thorough overhaul in the book’s 20-year history. Consider these changes:

1. New Media Landscape. A new chapter explores the contemporary media landscape that is daily more dominated by digital delivery. What is shaping this new landscape? What will our media landscape look like tomorrow? Is there a place for traditional media industries? Traditional content? How will media people stay on top of their game? Is Glenn Beck the future? Or Arianna Huffington? Or, as Time magazine suggested in its annual Person of the Year cover article, is the future you? Think Facebook. Think Twitter.

2. Media Economics. A new chapter, “Media Economics,” underscores how mass media are driven by financial engines. The economic dynamics are complex and entire industries are rising and falling as you read this. How much longer will newspapers be with us? What are the implications? How will society be different without newspapers? How will the shifting industry affect citizen involvement in public policy? Can democracy survive in such a drastically different media environment?

3. Fading Industries. Until recently the primary print media—newspapers, magazines and books—each warranted a chapter. No more. Industries rooted in Gutenberg technology are becoming an ever-thinner sliver of the media landscape. Reflecting this reality, the 10th Edition has consolidated the major print media into a single chapter, “Ink On Paper,” the conceptually related industries of radio and sound recording into “Sound Media”, and the movie and television industries into “Visual Media.”

4. Media Infrastructure. Throughout this edition are updates on dramatic changes that are afoot in underlying structures of media industries. The recording industry, as an example, wobbled to the verge of extinction with the advent of digital downloads. Questions are being asked about the validity of copyright protections in the 21st century. Those protections, embedded in the U.S. Constitution, could force an entire reinvention of media structures and practices. Can Hollywood survive this new era of content downloading?

5. Updated MyCommunicationLab for Mass Communication. (www.mycommunicationlab.com) New features

in this interactive and instructive online solution help foster your understanding of media literacy and provide you with opportunities to learn more about careers in the media. The tenth edition is a tool to help you as a student become more intelligent and discerning as a media consumer. If you plan on a media career, the book is intended to orient you to the courses that will follow in your curriculum. This book, though, is only one of many tools for staying on top of the subject for many years to come.

If You Have To Take A Class...

I'm using this book in an online class on mass communication and I have to admit that I actually enjoy reading this book.

It covers every area of the media and its a very simple and informative read. 'Simple' used in this context means that I don't have to re-read a paragraph two or three times, just to make sense of what the author is trying to convey.

The chapters are pretty short, and the book has lots of nice, bright pictures (that's my inner child speaking). Each chapter begins with stories about a media personality and that's always interesting. I end up saying "I didn't know that," a lot to myself.

What I really like about the book is that its very up to the moment. It even mentions Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction.

So, if you have to take a class, especially an online class, it's nice to have a textbook that's so user friendly.

Inspiration for Applying Scrum
By Steve Berczuk
The first thing to know is that this isn't a detailed guide to Scrum practices, though there is a summary of the key practices in an appendix. Since there are lots of guides to Scrum at the practices at varying levels of details, having more about what the practices are would not add a lot of value. This book does inform you about how scrum works by helping you to understand the value of Scrum through stories of Scrum in use in various domains, and not just software.. The book is full of war stories (both literally and figuratively), and Sutherland is clearly proud of how he, his family, and organizations he has worked with, have applied scrum. Reading this book will help energize you to use Scrum to help your team succeed. This is not the only book on Scum you need. But if you want motivation to explore more about Scrum, or if you have been practicing Scrum for a while and are looking for renewed inspiration, give this book a read.

Why Scrum?
By C. Eggert
Many Scrum books discuss the "how". This book focuses on the "why". I think it's very important to understand the "why" before trying to worry about the "how", so if you're new to Scrum and are thinking about diving straight into a book discussing the processes, I recommend taking a step back and reading something like this to understand where Scrum came from, what problems it is designed to solve, and how it is applicable to your situation, if at all.

It gets a little over-ambitious towards the end, and tends to view Scrum as a silver bullet, which it is not, but the discussion in the first half of the book is great.

Great book to get you excited about Scrum
By John Price
This is a great overview of Scrum and its power and simplicity when applied in the real world; not just in software teams but in charity work, government and education contexts. I've been a Scrum Master, developer, trainer, and coach for 10 years and I found it compelling. After reading some of the other Amazon reviews, I'd like to set some expectations for anyone thinking of reading it. What it isn't:

* A detailed Scrum manual for software teams. There's a short overview in the appendix, but this material is covered in plenty of other places, such as the Scrum Guide at (...), or the excellent Essential Scrum by Ken Rubin and the series of related Addison-Wesley books.
* A guide to troubleshooting Scrum or resolving common pitfalls in Scrum software teams. There's nothing here about handling unruly Product Owners, or whether SAFe is an appropriate extension for your company.

What it is:

* A fantastic, story-driven overview of how Scrum came to be, real-world situations where it has turned projects around, and why you should consider adopting it. If you are a C-level executive or other leader who wants to be "sold" on all this Scrum/agile/lean stuff you've heard about, read this. Note the endorsement by Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup. The two books are good companions and written for a similar audience.
* For current Scrum practitioners, a fun read and refresher on why we're doing this thing called Scrum. It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day of backlog refinement, shipping increments and handling team impediments and forget about the spirit of the whole thing. Scrum is about getting out of the way of teams and letting them deliver above and beyond what's possible in command-and-control organizations.

Bottom line: This is a great companion book to others that explain Scrum in more detail, but it's more about the ideas behind it and the exciting possibilities it offers for people working on projects anywhere.

Great book
By Howard Lawler
This is a great book for preachers, but also for anyone who needs to appreciate the place of prayer in ministry. In an age when we focus so much time at being experts in ministry, Bounds calls us to be dependent on God. C. S. Lewis said to read more old books than new ones. This is certainly an old book that should be more widely read today. It is outstanding.

Amazing book
By Jaehoon79
I have read this book in Korean and I have been searching this for a long time in English. (I couldn't find this in Australia where I live in hard copy). This is amazing book for preachers like me who often forget to pray. When I feel so dry spiritually I read this book and pray. I cannot explain the value of this book in word. I was surprised that there are few reviews on this book. Must have for preacher!

Be in harmony with the divine nature
By Christopher Nyland
Bounds' little book, Preacher and Prayer, is one of those books that needs to be read slowly and often. After reading Preacher and Prayer I was not only convicted that I did not pray enough, but what prayers I said were mostly--in Bounds' words--heartless. I highly recommend the book for preachers--and teachers, for "It is impossible for the preacher to keep his spirit in harmony with the divine nature of his high calling without much prayer" (p.27). Not only is this edition of the book just the right size to place in your pocket for reading while you wait somewhere, it is reformatted which makes it much easier to read than others. Full of little gems that need to be marked and pondered on. Best $6.00 you could spend!

Designing Web Navigation, by James Kalbach

Thoroughly rewritten for today's web environment, this bestselling book offers a fresh look at a fundamental topic of web site development: navigation design. Amid all the changes to the Web in the past decade, and all the hype about Web 2.0 and various "rich" interactive technologies, the basic problems of creating a good web navigation system remain. Designing Web Navigation demonstrates that good navigation is not about technology-it's about the ways people find information, and how you guide them.

Ideal for beginning to intermediate web designers, managers, other non-designers, and web development pros looking for another perspective, Designing Web Navigation offers basic design principles, development techniques and practical advice, with real-world examples and essential concepts seamlessly folded in. How does your web site serve your business objectives? How does it meet a user's needs? You'll learn that navigation design touches most other aspects of web site development. This book:

  • Provides the foundations of web navigation and offers a framework for navigation design
  • Paints a broad picture of web navigation and basic human information behavior
  • Demonstrates how navigation reflects brand and affects site credibility
  • Helps you understand the problem you're trying to solve before you set out to design
  • Thoroughly reviews the mechanisms and different types of navigation
  • Explores "information scent" and "information shape"
  • Explains "persuasive" architecture and other design concepts
  • Covers special contexts, such as navigation design for web applications
  • Includes an entire chapter on tagging
While Designing Web Navigation focuses on creating navigation systems for large, information-rich sites serving a business purpose, the principles and techniques in the book also apply to small sites. Well researched and cited, this book serves as an excellent reference on the topic, as well as a superb teaching guide. Each chapter ends with suggested reading and a set of questions that offer exercises for experiencing the concepts in action.

Rings True
By Brett Merkey

The title of this book does tend to focus things, doesn't it? A book totally dedicated to working out navigation challenges in Web products means that it is destined to be a one-stop keeper on your shelf. If you work in any capacity on Web front-ends, navigation is often the issue of issues, the source of stimulating and heated team discussions. This book won't end those discussions but the information in it will certainly add calm perspective to them.

_Designing Web Navigation_ seems to have it all in one place, including practice discussion at the end of each chapter and further reading recommendations. The amount of information is impressive. There is not a page without a visual aid of some sort. I certainly like having lots of screenshots of real sites with the commentary of the author.

I also like the practical knowledge of the author which informs his writing -- he emphasizes the variability of the rules in the complex contexts we Web workers tend to work in. Note, for instance, how differently he approaches Amazon's tabbed navigation from how usability guru Jakob Nielsen writes of them. Nielsen never passes up an opportunity to exclaim what is wrong wrong wrong about Amazon's tabs. Kalbach, instead, explains the motivation behind each passing stage in the evolution of those same tabs, giving the dynamic context. This rings true for those of us with daily working knowledge in constructing user interfaces.

I was a bit disappointed that the book did not have more on the specific problems of designing Web *applications* instead of conventional Web sites. However, the book is written is such a way that this is not a problem. The advice and arguments on p.236 "Don't start by designing the navigation on the home page" encapsulates quite well something I have learned working on agile development teams over the years.

I had a few problems with the readability of this book. Page numbers look like squished gnats and all paragraph sub-headings were a pretty but painful light blue. The extremely large line-height weakened the separation of paragraphs.

As I mentioned, this book is chock full of the right material that belongs on your shelf for when you need it...and you will.

Great Foundation Resource
By sprosser
This handsome volume will help web designers learn how to analyze their business needs and translate them into a workable navigation system for their users. Unlike some other design books, James Kalbach doesn't shove his own design principals down the reader's throat. Instead, he cites use cases and usability studies that will help readers figure out which design approach will best suit their needs.

Lots of screenshots from well-known websites, great layout and good organization make the book a pleasure to read. The book starts by explaining general principles, so even if you're new to the concept of interaction design, you'll quickly get up to speed. More advanced readers could skim the first chapters, and plunge in later, where they'll learn things like visual logic and information design. Each chapter ends with a good summary, thought-provoking questions that either reinforce or expand on the chapter's topics, and suggestions for further reading. Note: I do have one quibble with the layout. The page numbers are so small it made my eyes hurt. But everything else about the book's design is inviting and useful.

Caution, though, this is not a coding book. You won't learn how to make pop-up menus or write clean CSS. It's meant to help readers learn how to make decisions about the look and feel of a website. Even though the book is focused on web navigation, "regular" software designers will benefit, too, since so much interaction design is driven by users' expectations that all software should work like the web.

Good summary on web navigation
By Gcza Zoltn Kroly
This is an exhaustive book that summarizes a lot of aspects of website navigation. I recommend it mostly to information architects of bigger websites. It is more detailed on navigation than the Polar Bear book (Information Architecture for the World Wide Web), though I still find that book the absolute handbook on the topic.

The book consists of three parts:
The first part is about common user behaviours, types of navigation systems, labeling, etc. This part summarizes a lot of things you probably know but maybe it is not as structured in your head as the author makes it.

In the second part, the author presents a framework on how to design web navigation. From the evaluation to the actual visual layout of the navigation system, all relevant phases are discussed with examples.

The third part is about special navigation: search, social tagging and RIAs. A good intro to the topics with some interface patterns.

The book has a lot of screenshots that are quite current. Some chapters are quite self-explaining (ie. what are tag clouds, or what types of pages there are) but that is normal for a book that aims to be a baedeker for all things related to the topic.

Postcolonial London: Rewriting the Metropolis, by John McLeod

London's histories of migration and settlement and the resulting diverse, hybrid communities have engendered new forms of social and cultural activity reflected in a wealth of novels, poems, films and songs. Postcolonial London explores the imaginative transformation of the city by African, Asian, Caribbean and South Pacific writers since the 1950s.
John McLeod engages freshly with the work of both well-known and emergent writers, including Sam Selvon, Doris Lessing, V. S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Hanif Kureishi, Colin MacInnes, Bernardine Evaristo, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Fred D'Aguiar. In reading a select body of writing in its social contexts and exploring contrasting attitudes to London's diasporic transformation, he traces an exciting history of resistance to the prejudice and racism that have at least in part characterised the postcolonial city. Rewritings of London, he argues, bear witness to the determination, imagination and creativity of the city's migrants and their descendants.
This is a superb study of the ways in which 'imperial centre' might be rewritten as postcolonial metropolis. It represents essential reading for those interested in British or postcolonial literature, or in theorisations of the city and metropolitan culture.

Review

'In recent years, postcolonial studies has begun to focus on questions of how space is represented within what were once seen as 'imperial centres'. This book links this new focus with questions which open up the 'national' and thereby addresses issues which have always been important, such as the extent to which our visions of the national have been built on migrant and diasporic, colonial and postcolonial identities. Thus we are forced to question the extent to which London has always in a sense been a transformative 'postcolonial' space not only after Empire, or after immigration, but before.' - Susheila Nasta, Open University, UK

' ... a smart, interesting and well-written book.' - Wasafiri

'McLeod's fascinating book warrants the type of critical appreciatuion that one can only seldom bestow...it is engaging, refreshingly free of jargonistic compulsions, superbly attentive to detail - both historical-urban and textual - and, most importantly, responsive to the subtle networks of sensibilty and imagination which have changed the face of London in so many ways over the last fifty years.' - Cristina Sandru, The Journal of the English Association,

About the Author
John McLeod is a lecturer in English at the University of Leeds. He has written on postcolonial literature for a variety of publications, including Wasafiri, Interventions and Journal of Commonwealth Literature and is the author of Beginning Postcolonialism (2000).
