Hooks You from the Start and Never Lets Go
By Betty @ Bookish Regards
Willow’s memories of her parents are filled with love and happiness, but her time with them was brief. A tragedy at sea took them from her when she was just a little girl, leaving Willow to be raised by her mother’s sister, Hope. Years later, she is back at her parent’s home, preparing it for sale, when she discovers an invitation for a photography exhibit—addressed to her, sent by a man she’d never met—opened and discarded in the trash. Willow questions her aunt about it, but Hope refuses to answer her questions. Frustrated, Willow searches for answers and, after discovering secrets that have been buried for years, wonders if her entire life has been built on a foundation of lies.

My Sister’s Secret hooks you from the start, and never lets go. The story is told through Willow’s eyes in the present, along with tantalizing glimpses of the past through the eyes of Charity, Willow’s mother. If you’re like me, you’ll think early on that you’ve got everything figured out, and know exactly where things are headed. And you’ll be wrong. This story is anything but predictable, filled with plot twists you’ll never see coming, and revelations that are as shocking as they are heartbreaking. The writing is pure perfection—the complexities of the characters are revealed with excellent timing, keeping you engaged in the story and provoking a whirlwind of emotions that linger long after you read the final sentence. All of which makes this a Book Worth Reading.

I’ll be keeping Tracy Buchanan on my author radar from now one… and you should, too.

I received an advance review copy of this book via Netgalley and Bookouture in exchange for an honest review.

Hope and (yes) Charity are all quite different but one thing they do have in common is their love of the ocean
By Postcard Reviews
Sisters Faith, Hope and (yes) Charity are all quite different but one thing they do have in common is their love of the ocean.

My Sisters Secret is set with different timelines and various places, which gives Ms Buchanans second novel the most romantic and whimsical feeling.

Willow is Charity’s daughter, and Charity and Willows father Dan were drowned at sea when Willow was very young. Living with her Aunt Hope who never speaks of her sister, Willow also has a love of the sea and as a diver follows in her mothers footsteps and visits submerged forests found on a map in Charity’s belongings.

With secrets, love and a good mix of twists and turns this is a fabulous summer read. I was completely absorbed in the characterisation and plot of this novel.

I love it when an author takes a subject such as submerged forests, and gives the reader a learning experience as well as a fabulous read. I had to research such forests and found them to be some of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Such a wonderful tale.

Haunting tale full of twists
By Amy@Novelgossip
This one hooked me right from the start. Willow is searching for answers about her parents lives and is desperate to find out anything she can about the people they were. They died tragically when she was seven, so her memories are limited. Hope and Willow’s relationship is strained for reasons Willow isn’t even quite sure of. She knows her aunt loves her, but anytime she asks about Charity she is stonewalled. Because she can’t find the answers she is searching for at home, she sets off on a journey to the truth.

Willow’s voyage leads her to travel the world retracing her mothers steps. All she knows is that her mother had a deep fascination with sunken forests, so she sets off to see them for herself. Willow is a diver and the scenes where she is exploring these underwater forests are absolutely breathtaking. My favorite aspect of the novel is that Buchanan creates gorgeous imagery that really pulls the reader in. She made me want to visit these haunting forests myself, which is not anything I’ve ever dreamed of doing. Her descriptions of the seas and lakes are stunning and conjure up images of true beauty.

The novel was told from both Willow’s point of view in the present and Charity’s perspective from years ago. Beginning in the 70’s right before her sister Faith’s tragic death all the way up to Charity’s own unfortunate demise, Buchanan takes the reader on a journey that is intriguing and emotional. Along the way you meet a cast of characters that are fascinating and leave the reader wondering what exactly they are hiding. Along with Willow, Faith, Charity, and Hope, there is Niall, a boy the three sisters grew up with on Busby-by-the Sea, Dan, Willow’s father, Ajay who is Willow’s diving buddy, and Lana who was Dan’s first wife. These characters add drama and suspense to an already suspenseful story.

I don’t want to say too much more as I think this is the type of book that could be totally spoiled very easily. Suffice it to say, I throughly enjoyed every minute of this book. The ending was perfect and neatly tied up any loose ends and answered all the lingering questions I had. I was only sad to see it was over.

From the Author
In the Thrive Foods, I introduce something called the Nutrient-to-Resource Ratio, which considers the amount of each natural resource that goes into food production in exchange for the amount of nutrients that food offers. Based on these findings, I then make suggestions as to what foods are most beneficial to personal health as well as environmental preservation. The goal is simple: get as high a level of health-boosting micronutrients from food, while expending the smallest amount of each natural resource to do so. (Essentially, it's a mathematical way of saying plant-based whole foods make a lot of sense). There are also 200 recipes, including a few from my favorite North American restaurants, as well as a few of my favorite chefs.

About the Author
Brendan Brazier is a former professional Ironman triathlete and the creator of VEGA, an award-winning whole food product line. Recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on plant-based nutrition, Brazier is a guest lecturer at Cornell University.

I wanted to like it
By Amazon Customer
I wanted to like this book. However, it did disappoint me, and it left me wondering about the book's intended audience.

A large part of the book is devoted to Brazier's outlining his nutritional philosophy. However, this material was already covered in his earlier book, Thrive. I bought this book expecting it to focus mainly on recipes based on this philosophy, and I was a little disappointed by how much of it was devoted, instead, to rehashing his earlier book.

My other worry about the book is that a lot of the book's recipes just aren't, I think, very practical--or, if they are, they're only going to be practical for a limited number of readers. A large number of recipes require pretty obscure ingredients--stuff that just isn't accessible to someone like myself, who lives in a mid-sized city, or readers in more rural communities. Not to put to fine a point on it, but I think you're going to need to have access to a pretty well-stocked health food store to implement most of the recipes in this book. (I found, too, that many of the recipes in this book are detailed and time-consuming; it was tough to find time to cook them given my work hours each week.)

Perhaps these criticisms say more about me than about the book's shortcomings. I'm a long distance runner who switched over to something fairly close to a vegan diet a few years ago. I was already sold on Brazier's nutritional philosophy when I bought this book; I was hoping to acquire some more recipes that would make it a little easier for me to implement it in my life. However, there weren't as many recipes in the book as I expected, and most of them weren't feasible for me, either because of the obscurity of their ingredients or because I just don't have enough free time to devote to cooking them. There are some notable exceptions. (The recipe for lentil soup with wilted spinach is a keeper!) But I felt that most of the recipes in this book are only going to be helpful for a small group of readers.

Great book, solid whole foods recipes.
By Maralee Garrison
I bought this book to increase my knowledge in not only eating a plant based (vegan) diet, but also to learn how to fuel our bodies, better, for athletic activity and recovery. I found out that it is truly possible to up your personal athletic abilities through the use of a whole foods plant based diet.

The recipes in this book are solid and easy to follow. Although, I do wish there were more in the way of images, as I am a visual person. Regardless, I like the book, the layout and recipes it has. It contains very clean, healthy recipes that will help your body not only perform it's best, during activity, but also to aid in a quicker recovery, helping to reduce stress on your body. This book has been used in my household a lot and I'm very happy with it.

Excellent Healthy Cookbook
By Jill Barrett
This guy obviously knows his stuff. He is the picture of health and really seems to practice what he preaches. I have only tried one of his ice cream recipes so far, and it was very tasty! He seems to have a very nice array of recipes, all easy to make and without a bunch of hard to find ingredients. I give it a thumbs up!
The pictures show the outline and contents of the book along with some pictures of his creations.

Great Historical Text
By Daniel E. Cureton
I got this book as part of my collection of violin making. I study the topic quite extensively, hoping to one day to make my own. Most of the books out there though are kind of pricey since it is such a small field. I was really glad to see this book for such a low price! It is a reprint from an early 20th century manuscript. It even contains the original ads that were included by shops and makers of the day. As far as I know, the information about the mixes and amounts for each varnish and so on hasn't change, although some of the historical, geographical information has. The author uses old names or countries like Siam for Thailand when describing where to procure materials such as beetle wings or fine powders. Obviously that might not be the case today, but it is very interesting to look at the recipes used and the theory behind why oil varnish is actually a means of sealing and protecting the instrument from decay while spirit varnish is just for show and doesn't protect the instrument or preserve it like Oil is intended too. Recommend for all luthiers and enthusiasts.

The only thing missing is a resource list. It is good to know it is hard to find the right materials, but it would be great to know where you might start looking.

Disappointing. Pamphlet not a book. Only 31 pages long in large print. If you need information on this enigmatic subject I would suggest VIOLIN VARNISHES BY JOSEF & REINER HAMMERL instead.

Review
"I like the very user-friendly approach and layout of the Illustrated book, as well as the pedagogy - the review skills and concepts. The students are reading and using the extra tips and information in the margins, which is a surprise to me because with the previous book I used they were overwhelmed by too much information. This 'hits it'."

"My custom Illustrated books cover the material well. My students tell me that they are written in a way they can understand. The books give excellent material but leaves the instructor room for innovative projects. The exercises are great learning tools. When the students tell me they are reading the text, I know we have made a good choice."

"Very user-friendly for students. Good graphics and activities. Provides the concepts in a way students understand."

The Rise and Fall of Class in Britain, by David Cannadine

Although it is widely believed that the British are obsessed with class to a degree unrivaled by any other nation, politicians in Britain are now calling for a "classless society," and scholars are concluding that class does not matter any more. But has class -- once considered the master narrative of British history -- fallen, failed, and been dismissed? In this wholly original and brilliantly argued book, David Cannadine shows that Britons have indeed been preoccupied with class, but in ways that are invariably ignorant and confused. Cannadine sets out to expose this ignorance and banish this confusion by imaginatively examining class itself, not so much as the history of society but as the history of the different ways in which Britons have thought about their society.

Cannadine proposes that "class" may best be understood as a shorthand term for three distinct but abiding ways in which the British have visualized their social worlds and identities: class as "us" versus "them;" class as "upper," "middle," and "lower"; and class as a seamless hierarchy of individual social relations. From the eighteenth through the twentieth century, he traces the ebb and flow of these three ways of viewing British society, unveiling the different purposes each model has served.

Encompassing social, intellectual, and political history, Cannadine uncovers the meanings of class from Adam Smith to Karl Marx to Margaret Thatcher, showing the key moments in which thinking about class shifted, such as the aftermath of the French Revolution and the rise the Labor Party in the early twentieth century. He cogently argues that Marxist attempts to view history in terms of class struggle are often as oversimplified as conservative approaches that deny the central place of class in British life. In conclusion, Cannadine considers whether it is possible or desirable to create a "classless society," a pledge made by John Major that has continued to resonate even after the conservative defeat. Until we know what class really means-and has meant-to the British, we cannot seriously address these questions.

Creative, erudite, and accessible, The Rise and Fall of Class in Britain offers a fresh and engaging perspective on both British history and the crucial topic of class.

Amazon.com Review
"Class," the greengrocer's daughter Margaret Thatcher once remarked, "is a Communist concept. It groups people as bundles, and sets them against one another." The notion of social and economic classes has certainly been a durable one, and it has proven useful to not only Communist theoreticians but also historians and social scientists of all stripes. Nowhere does the idea of class seem quite so powerful as in Britain, writes London University historian David Cannadine in this engrossing study: Although his fellow historians there have largely abandoned class analysis in their work, social distinctions and divisions persist and remain powerful. That historians (notably among them the Marxist scholars E. P. Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm) and politicians now prefer to disregard those distinctions, Cannadine believes, is the result of "the shift from the traditional preoccupation with people as collective producers to the alternative notion of people as individual consumers"--the triumph, in other words, of market capitalism. Yet, Cannadine continues, it is through the lens of class that Britons "understand and describe their social worlds," and not through other idealized models. Cannadine examines the work of scholars and political thinkers who have attempted to alter that view, among them Conservative leader Stanley Baldwin, whose "main concern was to change the way the British looked and felt and thought about their society and themselves." However well intentioned, such efforts are doomed to failure, Cannadine argues, and although Tories and Labourites promise a classless society to come, the British view will likely remain class-bound. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Class has been a touchstone for historians of all ideological stripes over the last century, but no consensus has emerged. "The rise of the middle class," for instance, has been located in every century of British history from the 14th to the 19th. Clearly, something is amiss. Here Cannadine pragmatically reframes the question, looking at the perception, rather than the reality, of class over the last 300 years of British history and attending to the ways that political commitments have shaped writers' and politicians' conceptions and rhetoric on the issue. What he finds is startling: consistently, throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, three models of class have prevailed in British thought?and within the work of individual thinkers. The first divides Britain into the rich and the poor (a model generally used to foment, or warn of, class war); the second divides society into three parts, the working, middle and upper classes (used to praise the virtue of the middle class); the third presents British society as thoroughly hierarchical, with every individual having a proper place, which is marked off from those above and below by minuscule increments (used to praise and reinforce the "traditional" nature of British society). Ultimately, Cannadine shows that all three models are valid to some degree but that none can claim to represent the rock-bottom truth. The same applies to other modern nations. In the U.S., for instance, the first two models are just as constantly and contradictorily invoked. However, the third is unique to Britain. Therefore, Cannadine finds, it is the third model, that of a steeply graded hierarchy, that is most illustrative of British society and the self-perception of its members. Cannadine succeeds at striking a balance between offering detailed evidence and making a comprehensive argument about a vast, contentious topic; his book is a joy to read.

From Library Journal
Cannadine (history, London Univ.; Aspects of Aristocracy: Grandeur and Decline in Modern Britain, LJ 6/15/94) considers whether a classless society in Britain, as called for by recent politicians, is really possible. Cannadine believes that class is best understood not according to society's history as a whole but according to what culture does to inequality and social structure. The author visualizes class in three ways: us vs. them; upper, middle, and lower class; and the seamless hierarchy of individual social relations. Tracing these definitions of class in British society from the 18th century to the present day, he shows the different purposes these models have served in history and how attitudes toward class have changed. A unique discussion of class obsession in Britain supported by detailed research.?Mary F. Salony, West Virginia Northern Community Coll. Lib., Wheeling

Thoughtful
By R. Albin
This well written and thoughtful book is a analysis of the concept of class in recent British history. Cannandine is not pursuing detailed historical sociology but is rather primarily interested in how class was/is conceptualized. Cannandine traces the history of different conceptions of class. This is more important than it sounds because Cannandine shows that different conceptions of class often had significant political and social consequences. Cannandine deals also with some historigraphic issues. Indeed, the title of this book refers less to historical realities than it does to the way historians have conceptualized class in analyzing recent British history. The 'Rise' of Cannandine's title refers mainly to an essentially Marxist conception of British history since the 18th century put forward by historians like EP Thompson. The 'Fall' of the title refers to the failure of the simple Marzist model to actually describe historic reality.

For Cannandine, class is the conceptualization of social stratfication and inequality. This is clearly related to economic realities but generally much more complex. The Marxist (though as Cannandine points out, Marx took his concept from classical British economists like Smith) concept of class as determined by individual relationship to the means of production is one concept. Cannandine describes 3 basic concepts of class in recent British history. The first and arguably most important is the concept of class as hierarchy; a finely differentiated and graded ladder of social status. A second is a tripartite division of society - upper, middle, and lower. The last is a dichotomous us versus them concept. Cannandine traces the prominence of these different concepts at different points in British history, how closely they actually described the phenomena they were addressing, and perhaps most interesting, how these concepts were deployed in and affected political life. Like Cannandine's other work, this analysis is very well documented and the quality of writing is excellent. In addition to the main theme, this book contains a number of other interesting comments, such as Cannandine's discussion of Margaret Thatcher and an insightful analysis of the role of the empire in maintaining the British sense of hierarchy.

The concept of class as hierarchy emerges as not only the most important but also the most characteristically British. Maintained not only by economic stratification but also by status markers related to the persistence of the aristocracy and the monarchy, class as hierarchy commands the allegiance of a remarkable spectrum of British society.

The Empathy Gap: Building Bridges to the Good Life and the Good Society, by J. D. Trout

A road map to empathic and efficient decisions and policies, constructed from new insights in the science of human judgment

Faced with another's suffering, human beings feel sympathy and may even be moved to charity. However, for all our good intentions and vaunted free will, we are lousy at making the bigger decisions that actually improve lives. Why? Drawing on his sweeping and innovative research in the fields of psychology, behavioral economics, and neuroscience, philosopher and cognitive scientist J. D. Trout explains how our empathic wiring actually undermines the best interests of individuals and society. However, it is possible to bridge this "empathy gap" and improve our decision-making. Here, Trout offers a tantalizing proposal- how to vault that gap and improve the lives of not just ourselves but the lives of everyone all around the world.

From Publishers Weekly
In this dramatic challenge to cherished American concepts like individualism, free will and laissez-faire economics, Trout (Epistemology and the Psychology of Human Judgment) presents an alternative story grounded not in the abstractions of political theory or economics, but in the moisture and grit of human psychology. Studies by cognitive scientists and psychologists reveal an empathy gap, where individuals repeatedly make biased and selfish choices despite their best attempts to the contrary. The author posits that government can bridge the gap and cites vaccination, estate tax, helmet laws and food safety as issues that government has successfully handled for the greater good. For fighting poverty: "the best hope... is amending the Constitution to guarantee an above-poverty income to all citizens." Trout recognizes that government may not always make the right choices, but suggests that if it depended more on automated processes and the advice of social scientists, it might recover the trust that it has lost. For some, Trouts book will seem a panacea for a selfish world, but others may question whether it is really possible to prevent the same biases that affect individual decisions from affecting larger, governmental entities. Review
"The Empathy Gap is an important and engaging book, and Trout's ideas are eye-opening and fascinating. Trout explains a large set of new ideas about human rationality, emotion and well-being, and connects them to pressing social and political issues. This is an invaluable enrichment of public discourse, which could lead to new ways of framing our current dilemmas and to new solutions to them."
-Steven Pinker, author of The Blank Slate and The Stuff of Thought

"Trout engagingly identifies the issues facing citizens who worry about others' exploiting their natural imperfections as decision makers, but also worry about relying on paternalistic institutions to protect them. Recognizing that those institutions are similarly flawed, Trout calls fro information sharing, public deliberation, and empirical evaluation of interventions."
-Baruch Fischhoff, Howard Heinz University Professor, Social and Decision Sciences, Carnegie Mellon University, and past president of the Society for Judgement and Decision Making

"J.D. Trout's The Empathy Gap provides insightful answers to explain how good people can look the other way and do so little to respond to massive problems affecting other human beings. He uses the latest findings in behavioral decision research, with his practical understanding of philosophy to outline a better world. We would all be better off if the new administration in Washington read and understood the messages that are outlined in this. In fact, Trout's The Empathy Gap explains so much of what has gone wrong for the last eight years. This work has the power to transform how we think about and act on challenges to improve society."

a clarification--not a review
By Read-Only
I was confused at the existence of two books by this author on the same topic published very close together. After considerable effort, I found that Why Empathy Matters is the paperback edition of The Empathy Gap, which doesn't seem to be explicitly stated on either Amazon page. The author's online vita explains this.

I just mention this so that readers don't buy the book twice by mistake or waste time (like me) wondering which one was more appropriate for them to read.

(I rated it five stars because Amazon wouldn't allow me to add this note without providing a rating.)

A fun book on decision making and policy
By G.A. Wilson
The first thing I noticed about this book is that - to my pleasant surprise -- it is not at all a self-help book. Instead, it's a book that describes -- in entertaining and highly readable prose -- how we can effect significant improvements in well being by using social policy to make an end run around our most common human foibles.

Here I will briefly summarize each of the six chapters to give a sense of how the book unfolds.

Chapter 1 (Bridging the Empathy Gap) - introduces a theme that runs throughout the book - that empathy can be good, but can also be fickle, and we need social policies to harness its power for the good. I found myself wanting more of a sense cohesiveness to the examples. But they made more sense as I got deeper into the book.

Chapter 2 (The Trappings of Freedom) "Free will is a bit like a sheep. There really is an animal there, but it's amazingly skinny when you've shaved all the wool off." (That's my favorite quote from the book!). The argument here - familiar in social psychology but I'm betting not so in philosophy - is that much of our behavior is shaped by external forces, much more so than we ever recognize - an important premise for the proposals introduced later.

Chapter 3 (Can We Rebuild This Mind?) - here Trout urges that we should develop behavioral policies that impose external constraints to ensure that we do not fall prey to destructive biases that impede good decision making. This chapter provides a really nice summary of different cognitive biases that we are prone to - these are probably familiar to many readers already, but not everyone.

Chapter 4 (Outside the Mind) - what do hospital computer screensavers depicting colorfully germy hands, a urinal with a drawing of a life-sized fly inside, and chevron markings on roads have in common? They are each a man-made feature of the local environment that effectively corrects detrimental tendencies in behavior. This is the most entertaining chapter in the book - the examples are at times hilarious, and all fascinating.

Chapter 5 (Stat Versus Gut) anticipates the concern that behavior-shaping policies will all be expensive and complicated. Trout argues that many welfare-enhancing policies are not only simple but also money saving. This chapter is a great lesson for non-policy-wonks like me who tire of jargon-laden cost-benefit analyses. At the same time, I would have liked to see an acknowledgement that not all solutions will be simple and cheap.

Chapter 6 (The New Republic) is the final chapter, and it presses for the adoption of behavioral science based policy, to increase overall happiness and well-being. These include small scale changes that can produce big changes in the lives of individual people, like the elimination of grocery-free deserts in inner cities, and walk-to-work programs that encourage people to avoid long commutes. Trout calls for "benign social experimentation" - science backed policies that can potentially increase well-being. Some of these are seemingly small tweaks that we might not even notice but could reap huge benefits - things like using linguistics-based evidence to regulate drug names to avoid prescription related errors. But Trout doesn't shy away from more controversial topics, like handgun control, suicide prevention, and helmet laws - I was pleased to see an added layer of complexity here. This is clearly the most ambitious chapter in the book, as well as the most original and the most thought provoking as well.

Overall, the book has provoked me to look at problems that plague us individually and socially in a new light - they no longer seem as daunting and insolvable. Of course, this book is not a panacea, it's just a starting point. But its timing couldn't be better - it unabashedly embraces the notion that the time for real social and political Change has come - what distinguishes this book is that it provides a roadmap for how we can go about it. Highly recommended - there's something for everyone here.

Quit dithering while the world burns
By cassdog
You have biases in your thinking that hold you back from doing what is best for yourself. We are poor at saving money, constantly value our present self over our future selves, make decisions based on arbitrary starting points and we value the status quo for no other reason than 'it is the way things are'. These cognitive biases are a result of our evolutionary heritage, a patchwork of cognitive tools latched on to previous cognitive shortcuts which themselves were imperfect. Not only do these cognitive biases get in the way of thought processes and actions regarding our own lives, they inhabit our very thinking on public policy and social welfare issues. A particularly profound example used in the book is that we have more empathy for those close to us and those similar to us. A politician who if sitting next to a starving child would obviously withhold seconds so the child could eat but once around other wealthy politicians with no starving children around he would thoughtlessly pass a bill that day stripping the dinner off of the plates of millions of children. Additionally, we are notoriously short-sighted and bad at estimating future costs so we are awful at saving for retirement. So a plan like Social Security that forces society to save is an essential remedy to create a stable society where the elderly aren't homeless or hungry. After a tour-de-force of our hardwired sloppy thinking, the author spends most of the book creating prescriptions to get around our inherent weaknesses to create a better life for us all...sometimes against the will of our cognitive biases. The author terms these outside strategies. These are strategies that don't rely on individual changes, or individual willpower to overcome our biases. Instead, outside strategies are policies which give us better options where our cognitive biases won't get in the way. I found this part of the book very fascinating and I would love to read more about adoption of these outside strategies worldwide. The other idea that the author argues for is something that I have been very passionate about for years, something that I have wanted to shout from the rooftops. The author proposes the use of empirical studies on public policies to determine outcomes, based particularly on new findings in social sciences, psychology and behavioral neurology. There truly are right and wrong answers to some of our public policy questions regardless of the two-party system and the point-counterpoint nature of our media. He even suggests that we use the scientific method to experiment on 'relatively safe' public policies and measure the results. Why aren't public policies set up this way? This book is very pragmatic and the author attempts many solutions to these problems which I will leave to the reader. But this was a refreshing and unique look in to public policy debates which have reached a standstill and bogged down our advancement for too long. While we dither over our petty disputes, children starve, the uninsured die and a more perfect union slips away.
