About the Author
Kate Rantilla lives at Bear Farm, a 1796 cape and former blacksmith shop at the foot of Mount Monadnock in SW New Hampshire. A poet, singer, and photographer, she is a member of the Creative Group at Bedlam Farm. When not writing, working on her place (never ending with a very old house), or exploring the outdoors in the company of her dogs, she sings with The Keene Chorale and the Fitzwilliam Occasional Singers. She shares her poetry, haiku, essays, and photographs on her blog lifewithhorace.com.

Nature Revealed, Close to Home

This beautiful little book is a labor of love by a gifted New Hampshire poet, photographer and graphic designer, a rich melding of poems and photos that feed off each other, photos a la Eliot Porter, poems a la Mary Oliver - nature revealed, close to home, personally, vividly, all with passages opening into higher meanings, spiritual kicks. Here's one of my favorites (and you should see its photo twin!):

GREEN WATER
sun rich light, through
leaves above this brook,
drops glowing green
into the water
moving surely
through my woods,
nothing murky,
this is crystal
over pebbled granite,
drawing with it
memory and flavors
held by silt
and wood orts, shed,
by gently rotting windfalls
the water of this moment
leaves us, on its way
to pond, then stream and river
with its story, bringing news
of seasons past
and momentary glories
as it joins
the greater flow.

In the overflow of words that one is bombarded with by daily life and social media, sometimes it is hard to hear the ones that really count. Poet Rantilla has managed to use just the right number of words to convey the depth and breadth of her feelings about the life experience. I was not expecting the third and fourth readings of each of these poems to make them start to feel like old familiar rocks on a beach landscape- steadfastly resolute- season after season but maybe a little altertered by the passing of time and weather. Well Done!

I met Kate Rantilla at a creative retreat, prior to the publishing of her first book, and was privileged to hear her read a number of her early poems in person. Her ability to capture emotion, as well as nature, space and time, with her words is amazing. I loved the poems in this collection. She is an exciting, and sometimes haunting voice. I am looking forward to what creates next.

Top Pick For Summer Reading

I'm a fan of Timothy Hallinan's Junior Bender dectective series and that goes for this third outing, too. The author has never been better in the scenes he sets up or in the snappy dialog between Bender and his frequent and scary employer, old-time Hollywood power broker, Irwin Drexler. Drexler contracts with Bender for burglary but equally for his other specialty--solving problems for criminals who do not care to involve public law enforcement personnel in sorting out their troubles.

Junior's name is apt: he is 'bent', being a professional burglar from the age of 15. Also, in writing the series, Hallinan 'bends' time: the setting is at once 'retro', going back to the 'Turner Classic Movie' period of Hollywood's 'Golden Era' and blurring its way into the Fifties, Sixties, Eighties and on to the new Millennium. This is no easy trick but Hallinan always makes it work for me!

The author packs in the classic Hollywood details and he is very strong on descriptive writing. He can write violence, compassion, the details of burnt out lives, LA geography--really, whatever he needs to write to advance the story line and keep the 'atmosphere' at a high level. Characters just seem to 'roll of the tip of the author's pen.' Some of them are 'stock' items, like the hard-bitten secretaries or actress 'extras' and the Hollywood 'hangers on' like agents and studio PR experts, but they all live on the page for me. Even Drexler's beefy 'muscle' are given a little bit extra in terms of character. Bender is a 'crusader' type of LA detective with plenty of heart, a bit of 'naivite' and a willingness to exact revenge where it is merited. It is no surprise then that this third outing aims at revealing the past as well as in unmasking and punishing a murderer. Even when he is being a 'father' to his daughter the 'vibe' stays hip and cool: she is a computer whiz at 13 and has her own 'wise beyond her years' take on family life and romance.

If you can 'suspend your disbelief' a bit and buy into the above description, you will very likely enjoy the Bender books as much as I do!

This is a must read: a page turning plot, great characters, a streak of appealing humour and intelligent, memorable writing. What's not to like? This author just gets better and better. Buy, read, and buy some more for your friends; they'll thank you. Highly recommended.

The detective thriller as literature

Roger Ebert once wrote about film that entertainment is how life should be while art is how life is. Hallinan has written a piece of art that is also entertaining. Often with detective fiction we get a wonderful, exciting plot that entertains us mightily. But with The Fame Thief we get that plus observations about life that come from experience and wisdom. You don't have to like detective fiction to enjoy this book, but if you do you're going to love it.

I got the books however your picture above shows the first printing. I got a cheaper version of a reprint. Some sites I visited showed the reprinted version. I selected your site thinking I would get the earlier version. I had some but not all of the first printing. Wanted to fill in the missing books. Try some place else next time where you can actually go and pick it off of a shelf. First and last on-line order!

Also since the order I have got nothing but junk mail from sites I could give a crap about. Time to change the ole email address again!!

It has all the things that I haven't even begun to be able to read. But it is all useful information for anyone who wants to set away from the past of the world in which we are all consuming and stat living without China lol.

It's okay

The workbook is okay, but I'm not sure how it's so highly rated. Each section shows basically the same 15 worksheets, and then there are 5 unique worksheets at the end of the section. It can get repetitive after a while.

The biggest annoyance is that the book talks a lot about "god" and sometimes it feels as if it were made for Christian counselors rather than mental health professionals. It looks like Dr. Riggenbach does therapy in Oklahoma, in the middle of the Bible Belt, so it makes sense, but would be a little less culturally competent for those who work with a lot of religious diversity.

Overall, I felt like the book helped me wrap my head around CBT with concrete examples and worksheets, but wish there was more to the book than there actually is.

Easy to follow!

Very easy to follow. The tools provided are easy to explain. My clients understood and enjoyed the assignments. In the past, I've used at least 3 other workbooks that had too much information which can be overwhelming for some readers. But this workbook was simple and kept the attention of the client. Most importantly, they completed the assignments and returned them. The content of the workbook provided insight into my clients problem; it gave them a better understanding. What I would like to see added to this book is a CD with reproducible forms.

It was concise with simple language and explanations. It is a great asset for beginning counsellors especially as it relates to conceptualizing a client's problems along with the overall treatment process. The layout of the book was easy to follow and the diagrams are easy to understand and explain to others. It was a great investment.

This is a Must Read!

If you're adopted like I am, then you must read this book. It will help you make sense of your life and how to start fitting in. Read Nancy's first book first - "The Primal Wound". This book will help put all the pieces together. It brought healing to my life.

She sounds frustrated at times and actually says stuff like, "get over it" and "stop it now"

I will be forever grateful to Nancy Verrier for writing the Primal Wound and the supplement of it in part I of this book. However, the actual practical aspect of healing which she addresses in part II I found very unhelpful. I get the feeling that Nancy's own adopted daughter must have been of the "acting out" variety. I myself, was the compliant child. A lot of the advice is about how the acting out adoptee can be unaware of the impact they have on others. She sounds frustrated at times and actually says stuff like, "get over it" and "stop it now". Its really her telling us how we behave and why, but beyond that telling us to just stop it. I wish it were that easy!!!! I'm almost 50, have had a great deal of therapy, have read dozen's of books on adoption, childhood trauma, etc, and would love to be "normal", but its not called the "primal wound" for no reason. I truly believe that Nancy has an incredible understanding of the pain and damage adoptees have. But I don't find the "healing" part of this book useful at all. There are no actual strategies per se, other than to stop doing things in a certain way. Its also hard to not feel somewhat chastised by her tone of frustration and anger with us adoptees for not snapping out of it. But hey, maybe I'm just saying all this because I'm adopted and I'm not taking responsibility for myself.

An Amazon Best Book of April 2015: Once upon a time, a couple or few decades ago, most American boys and girls in grade school were taught grammar and punctuation; we learned, for example, that “i” came before “e,” except after “c” (except sometimes, but never mind) and that the verb “to be” was “like an equal sign,” which meant that you used the nominative case (have I lost you yet?) on both sides of it. (“It is I,” in other words, is the correct, if dowdy, response to “Who’s there?”) Some of us were even taught to diagram sentences; some had parents who corrected us at the family dinner table. (I can still hear my father pressing the subjunctive upon me. “If I WERE,” he’d bellow, when I allowed as how there’d be later curfews if I “was” in charge.) Whether they retained the lessons or not, most people probably don't wax romantic about the grammar lessons or teachers of yore.

Which is why even those of you who don’t have the soul of a second-grade grammar teacher will love Between You and Me, the hilarious and delightful “memoir” by the longtime New Yorker copy editor, Mary Norris, who confides in the subtitle that she is a “comma queen.” (The above is not a full sentence, I know -- but I think I can get away with it by calling it "my style." Also, I put quotation marks around the word “memoir,” Mary – I know you’re wondering -- because I was trying to make the point that your book is an unusual take on the form, dealing as it does with thats and whiches as well as with your Ohio adolescence as a foot-checker at the local pool.) Who knew grammar could be so much fun -- that silly marks of punctuation could be so wickedly anthropomorphized (a question mark is like a lazy person), that dashes grow in families (there are big dashes and little dashes and they can all live peaceably within one sentence), that there was once a serious movement to solve the he-or-she problem with the catchall “heesh”? Clearly, Norris knows: her book is plenty smart, but it’s its (one’s a contraction, one’s a possessive) joyful, generous style that makes it so winning. This is a celebration of language that won’t make anyone feel dumb – but it’s also the perfect gift for the coworker you haven’t been able to tell that “between” is a preposition that never, ever, takes an object that includes the pronoun “I.” – Sara Nelson

Good writing and bad...

Mary Norris, a copy editor for The New Yorker has written a book, "Between You and Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen" which is a lot about grammar and a bit about her life and her job. I really can't believe that I am writing a review and tempting Ms Norris to judge my woebegone grammar!

Ms Norris's book is not a grammar textbook and she's really quite gentle on everyday speaking and writing. She discusses some punctuation that we all use - I really don't think she likes writing with dashes - and gives us examples of the good and the bad. (Let me say right up front that I couldn't write without using dashes and that's my excuse for using them! But I'm not writing for The New Yorker, and thanks god for that.) Ms Norris quotes a note Jacqueline Kennedy wrote to Richard Nixon after her husband's death. The note was dashed off in that breathy style with which she spoke - full of dashes to keep her thoughts somewhat straight. Norris takes the same note and "corrects" it. The result was a grammatical correct message, but one lacking in Mrs Kennedy's distinctive style. Would Richard Nixon want correctness - or heart? I know which one I'd want!

Ms Norris's book is great fun to read, while learning some "Ps" and "Qs". There are some swear words in the text; it's not offensive but just surprising. Now, in this review, I've tried to use most of the punctuation she writes about. Let's hope I'm using it correctly!

Two Stars, But Add a Star if You...

This is one of those add a star if you.... reviews. Mary Norris is a copy editor at the New Yorker magazine, which is probably the pinnacle of the profession. In a magazine, the copy editor is the enforcer, the person who assures that the standards for grammar, spelling and word usage are followed. The New Yorker publishes some of the best writers, its fact checking is the best in the industry, and its editors (with the exception of Tina Brown) are also among the finest in the industry. This may not mean much to people who don't care for the magazine, but for those of us who are long time followers of The New Yorker, this two-star book becomes a three star just for the insights it gives into a little seen aspect of the publication.

A great deal of the book is devoted to discussion of grammar and punctuation -- again a topic which most people aren't interested in. Most of us learn to speak and write as young children, and our understanding of the basic rules is inculcated along with the superego. Add a star if you care to review the proper use of the semi colon or pronoun selection.

Finally, there's Ms. Norris herself, who looks as if she should be devoting her life to perfecting the chocolate chip cookie, discussing her search for a source of #1 (soft lead) pencils, and revealing what for most of us will be new information about the two-hole pencil sharpener. Her charm should be good for the fifth star.

In other words, this is a wonderful book if all conditions are met. If you don't care for the magazine, could not care less about the future of the apostrophe, and have no interest in the properties of pencil erasers, you'll probably skip chapters and consider this book a waste of time and money. But, if all conditions are met, Between You and Me is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours.

A great read

I’ve got a bad habit of buying books about the history and proper usage of the English language and not reading them. I’ve got a shelf in my home library that’s attractively stacked with books like Bill Bryson’s Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way and Sister Bernadette’s Barking Dog by Kitty Burns Florey. I tend to read the first few pages, enjoy them as much as I expect to, then get distracted by some work of fiction or other. I’m terrible about nonfiction, even if it’s on a topic I’m very interested in. But Between You & Me was a Goodreads win, and I’m more likely to win other titles if I read and review this one, so I had a bit more motivation than usual. Also…well, it didn’t hurt that Mary Norris is so funny. Witness the following examples and tell me you don’t want to read this book, too:

“Whom” may indeed be on the way out, but so is Venice, and we still like to go there.

Chances are that if you use the Oxford comma you brush the crumbs off your shirtfront before going out.

Between You & Me covers such topics as spelling, punctuation, and profanity in a direct and easily-understood manner. Norris makes frequent mention of the ways that style and usage vary between major publications such as The New Yorker (where she’s worked since 1978) and The New York Times. There’s even an entire chapter dedicated to pencils and pencil sharpeners! (This might sound boring to you, but if it doesn’t, we should probably be friends.)

I learned from this book, and I enjoyed myself immensely while reading it. It’s made me want to pick up my next work of nonfiction sooner than the usual schedule (which would be maybe in six months or so?). It made me want to buy, read, and annotate/highlight a style guide to learn even more. I have an advance copy, but I’m tempted to buy a finished copy — partially to support the author, but also because the advance copy doesn’t include the Recommended Reading list. (Yes, I am that much of a nerd. I want to do the background reading!)

All in all: A great read for anyone with a sense of humor who’s also interested in usage, and a particularly great graduation gift for an English major.
