Ofri, an attending physician at New York City's Bellevue Hospital and founder of the Bellevue Literary Review, again displays the same sensitivity and carefully crafted writing that distinguished her first medical memoir (Singular Intimacies). The emphasis in these 14 engrossing pieces is on her determination to learn from those she has treated. Ofri begins by recounting a time when the shoe was on the other foot, when she, as a first-time expectant mother, was the patient. After a sonogram, Ofri and her husband were rather casually told that their baby's umbilical cord was missing one artery. Her disorientation and anxiety that day deepened her ability to empathize with those who are ill. In "A Day in the Clinic," she describes how a language barrier left her unable to effectively comfort an Asian man with a brain tumor. In the especially moving "Terminal Thoughts," Ofri intuits that a woman's signature on a Do Not Resuscitate order and her refusal of dialysis were rooted in depression. Ofri reworks her pain medications and extracts a promise that the patient will stay on dialysis. The patient will not be cured, but Ofri's goal is not to provide happy endings; rather, she aims to wed compassion to medical training and knowledge, to recall her ongoing struggles to understand the sick and to make their lives more bearable. The experience, originally planned as a quasi vacation to recover from the rigors of medical residency, resulted in much more than she bargained for. Indeed, Ofri learned more--the incidental findings of the title--about the softer emotional underbelly of medicine than she had picked up clinically. One can't help wondering whether this exceptional series of introspective essays on her experiences serves more to remind the Bellevue physician, as she now is, of patients' basic humanity than to record that humanity for posterity. The musings seem drawn from her very marrow and too personally raw to be originally intended for broad distribution. "In the end," she concludes, "medicine will always be about one patient and one physician together in one room, connecting through the most basic of communication systems: touch." Wow!

I rarely review books on Amazon because my writing always seems so abysmal in comparison to the work I'm reviewing. However, I really want to tell everyone what a wonderful book this is. I was deeply touched and found myself crying over several essays, wondering how my husband (a physician) manages. Ofri is a very good writer, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My only complaint was that it ended too soon, so I'm off to go buy "Singular Intimacies."

Compelling Read, Extremely well written

Recently I had finished reading SINGULAR INTIMACIES by Ofri and I was so disappointed that the book had to end. When I found out that she had written a new book, I picked it up right away. INCIDENTAL FINDINGS is an easier read in some ways because Ofri is now an attending physician at Bellevue. Her first book was a graphic depiction of a young doctor's education. Both books are exquisitely written, and I look forward to Ofri's third book (hopefully there will be one). I recommend her books to anyone who ever considered medicine as a profession, anyone who has considered any of the healing professions.

Similar as sumptions may even be made for some specific medical applications; for example, in angiography ofthe heart chambers the value is either zero (in dicating the absence of dye) or the value associated with the dye in the chamber. Another example arises in the electron microscopy of biological macromolecules, where we may assume that the object to be reconstructed is composed of ice, protein, and RNA. One can also apply electron mi croscopy to determine the presenceor absence ofatoms in crystallinestruc tures, which is again a two-valued situation.

Each chapter in the book is by different authors and so the level of detail, notation, etc. is uneven. The chapters are more than just reprints of previous materials and are self-contained. The early foundation chapters are written from a mathematician's perspective, which is wholly unsatisfying for an engineer. There is a minor emphasis on binary images throughout the book, but binary images are not treated in any depth. In general, the algorithm and application chapters are more overview than details. Examples are almost nonexistent which means this would be an extremely poor textbook even for upper-level classes. The example in chapter 11 is full of errors and a bit incomplete. Overall, the chapters are much better than any one of the conference papers they are based on, but you will still need to consult the references to really use any of the information.

Mystic: An AWESOME Follow-Up to Nightblade!

Mystic is an EXCELLENT follow-up to Nightblade (see my review). In Mystic, the reader gets to know more about the main characters (Loren and Xain in particular), but Robinson does a wonderful job of not giving *everything* away. As in Nightblade, the action in Mystic never really lets up. The main characters are constantly striving towards specific goals, thus making the reading experience very exciting and suspenseful. I finished Mystic over the course of only three days: I couldn't put it down! Also, in Mystic, the intrigue factor is considerably "upped." It will be interesting to see how some of the subplots Robinson introduces in Mystic resolve themselves in the later books. I very much look forward to the next installment in The Nightblade Series! One thing I would love to see in the next book is a map of the Nine Kingdoms. As I said in my review of Nightblade, I think that Robinson's writing is on par with many of the fantasy novels that are on the bestseller lists.

A difficult decision.

My rating was a difficult decision. I am enthralled with the story line but this issue is so full of editing errors it was distracting. I will continue to read each release but home more care is taken in the process in future releases.

Roller Coaster of a Read

I love this storyline. The characters are well fleshed out, and I find myself loving or hating them, rarely not caring about them. In Loren's case, unfortunately, there is a bit of hate there, caused by her seemingly smug and holier-than-thou attitude. Of course, that hate could be turned inward at the girl who once knew everything...

Mr. Garrett Robinson is doing a lively job of keeping this story entertaining and tortuous. There are not many things better than a roller coaster read that you don't want to end.
