Excellent academic text

I got a good sense of feminism, the history of feminist theory, and the history of art from reading this text. I will never see art history the same way. Spans a range of dates, media, artists and critics. I am an artist, not a theorist, but this book was accessible enough for me to use it to better understand my place in contemporary art practice. The extensive notes can lead you to other excellent sources for research.

A Unique view of Victorian London

I want to add my voice to those who have given this edition high reviews.
What makes this book unique is that it is a first hand account of the social conditions of poor London city dwellers almost two hundred years ago. It is also a catalog of the methods used in the countless street trades and confidence tricks that have all but disappeared in modern times. A few still existed when I was a child!
This is a far more interesting reading experience than conventional history books, which are written long after the events and therefore rely on comments gathered from distant sources. Unless we choose to believe that the author had reason to deceive us (Julius Caesar comes to mind) we do well to trust contemporary accounts. The book also strikes close to home. Many large cities in Europe, and the USA, suffered similar privations in the same period, and we may be willing to suppose that some of our family forebears were personally affected. Mayhew was the live reporter at the scene.

Richest source ever on Victorian London Laboring Poor

An astoundingly detailed account of life among the poor and on the streets of Victorian London, circa 1850. The personal accounts are amazing and continually surprising in their basic humanity. This book condenses Mayhew's original four-volume work. Sadly it had to leave out a gazillion details of the lives, thoughts, and methods of the rat--flea-fly-cockroach catchers! But it keeps a great long section about how early low-end commercial photographers cheated, bamboozled and otherwise wheedled six-pence out of customers who had no clue about what a photograph was.

Definitely an eye opener!

If you want to know how it was like for the lower working class in London and their daily routines and rituals, this is the book, written by someone who interviewed the ragtag army of merchants and menial workers who ecked out a meager and difficult existence of those days. Makes you appreciate living as it is today.

About the Author
Paul Davis (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin), professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico, has been the recipient of several teaching awards and academic honors, including that of Master teacher. He has taught courses since 1962 in composition, rhetoric, and nineteenth-century literature and has written and edited many scholarly books, including The Penguin Dickens Companion (1999), Dickens A to Z (1998), and The Lives and Times of Ebenezer Scrooge (1990). He has also written numerous scholarly and popular articles on solar energy and Victorian book illustration. His most recent book is Critical Companion to Charles Dickens (2007).

Gary Harrison (Ph.D., Stanford University), professor and director of graduate studies at the University of New Mexico, has won numerous fellowships and awards for scholarship and teaching. He has taught courses in world literature, British Romanticism, and literary theory at the University of New Mexico since 1987. Harrison's publications include a critical study of William Wordsworth, Wordsworth's Vagrant Muse: Poetry, Poverty, and Power (1994); as well as several articles on topics such as John Clare's poetry, Romanticism and Ecology, nineteenth-century culture, and teaching world literature.

David M. Johnson (Ph.D., University of Connecticut), professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico, has taught courses in world literature, mythology, the Bible as literature, philosophy and literature, and creative writing since 1965. He has written, edited, and contributed to numerous scholarly books and collections of poetry, including Fire in the Fields (1996) and Lord of the Dawn: The Legend of Quetzalcoatl (1987). He has also published scholarly articles, poetry, and translations of Nahuatl myths. His most recent book of poetry is Rebirth of Wonder: Poems of The Common Life (University of New Mexico Press, 2007).

John F. Crawford (Ph.D., Columbia University; postdoctoral studies, Yale University), associate professor of English emeritus at the University of New Mexico, has taught medieval, world, and other literature courses since 1965 at a number of other institutions including California Institute of Technology and Hunter College and Herbert Lehmann College of CUNY. The publisher of West End Press, an independent literary press with 120 titles, Crawford has also edited This Is About Vision: Interviews with Southwestern Writers (1990) and written articles on multicultural literature of the Southwest.

Great selections and organization in book

This book carries a great selection of classic works by tradition
I used this book for my World Lit course in January(required text), but have decided not to sell it back and keep it for reading sake.

I am used to reading from Norton Anthologies, so was a bit skeptical about reading from the Bedford Anthology. Surprisingly, in the end, I actually enjoyed the Bedford collection more. The context is given in the "in-between" blue pages of the book and gives excellent articles, short stories, and historical background for the main stories themselves. They were extremely helpful and expanded both my knowledge of significant historical events as well as influential literature.

Although, this product is considered the "compact" edition, the book is still considerably large and thick.
It is definitely not a book you would carry around in your purse or take everywhere with you for leisure reading.

It said it was a used a book. It ment it. All the pages were there; however, there v was something sticky on the cover I wish had been cleaned off. But it shipped quickly so it wasn't bad

Potential unfulfilled!

John Grisham can be one heck of a novelist when he sets his mind to it. But "The Associate" comes across as a bit lazy and unfocused. This story of a young and bright law student who is the victim of a blackmail scheme just wanders for a while and then kind of plops down in the end. I will admit that I found much of the writing interesting but it seems that Grisham wants to tell the reader the difficulties and detail of working for a massive law firm without adding any suspense or proper conclusion to the tale. Maybe he plans a sequel (?) which could be fairly dynamic but this book can be summed up fairly simply.
1. Kyle wants to work in the law.
2. Bad guy threatens Kyle with video and blackmails him to steal information from major legal firm. (Who is the bad guy? You'll never know.)
3. Kyle reluctantly cooperates.
4. Lots of meetings with bad guy and hero going over dull details.
5. Kyle agonizes
6. One moment of horror when a character dies (Who killed him? You'll never know)
7. Will Kyle execute plan of bad guy?
8. Then a completely deflating climax. (Believe me, you'll be sorely disappointed.)
There is a comparison on the book jacket to "The Firm" a previous Grisham hit novel. My advice, read "The Firm". If you must read this book, wait for the paperback to be on sale at the used bookstore near you.

Padding

Mr. Grisham is padding his billing sheet with The Associate, which seems almost to have been ghost-written. It reflects little of the talent behind The Partner, my favorite Grisham novel and, frankly, it made me somewhat upset to have spent 27 bucks. I would have been disappointed to buy this one in paperback. Time was that you started a Grisham novel and couldn't put it down. Had I not been stuck in an airport en route from a deposition I would not have had the patience to finish.

This book was like my sixth grade term paper; we all had them, you would count the words until you got to the end. Likewise, although there was some great potential in this story it was not realized. Sure, there were half-hearted attempts to bring other characters to life, but they were all just that, half-hearted. The ending was among the most disappointing that I have ever come across--in any genre.

Nobody learns anything. There is no character progression--just a slow moving train wreck from which nobody emerges having been enlightened. In fact, the reader feels much like our protagonist--forced to endure a journey that was expected to be something completely different and not entirely sure how to escape. Heavens, big law firms are such a deliciously evil mix of stunningly warped personalities and distorted goals that any number of excellent thrillers could be drawn from facts known to just about any lawyer.

I do hope that Mr. Grisham rediscovers the joy of telling a story--he is very good at it; however, I cannot recommend this book.

Disappointed

I have read every one of John Grisham's books and was looking forward to this one, however, after finishing it last night, I must say I was very disappointed. The ending (which, of course, I won't give away) was very lame. He spent a lot of time on the big bad law firms abusing the associates and not enough on the real story of Kyle and who were these people who were ruining his life. I would definitely not recommend it.

About the Author
Robert Courtade served in the U.S. Army 1968-1971. After the service he became an award-winning computer operator and computer specialist for the Department of Defense. In 1985 a physician mentioned Recovery International as a method for dealing with anxiety and anger. Robert attended meetings of this organization and learned the program. After many years of membership, he decided to write a book explaining The Recovery Method for fear and anger to a modern audience.

Great introduction to Recovery International

I first reviewed this way back in 2008 when I purchased the book from Amazon.

It has been available for Kindle for awhile now, and I installed on my phone in Oct 2010. Now I have it on my Kindle and am so pleased to have a Recovery resource that I can take with me everywhere for easy reading and studying. Mr. Courtade has done a great service by bringing "the Recovery Method" to the public. The Kindle version has an embedded TOC with page numbers and i searchable, a real plus for me.

I only wish that Abraham Low Self Help Systems (the umbrella organization for Recovery International) would make some of its literature available in this way. It certainly would increase RI exposure.

As someone new to Recovery, I was finding Dr. Low's writings difficult to understand and the meeting to be extremely foreign until I found this book.

It explains most of the tools. The only thing missing is an index.

I have recommended it to members of my group.

Constructive and sensible responses to troubling situations

I have been a follower and supporter of the Recovery system of self help for some time. My wife used it to overcome a debilitating fear of flying, and there are many effective everyday uses of the wisdom embedded in the system.

This book is especially welcome since it distills many of the most important Recovery principles into simpler, more readable text than the original Mental Health Through Will Training book by Dr. Abraham Low, written about 1940. It's the kind of book you can pass on to a person who's having a hard time in life to give them tools to find constructive and sensible responses to troubling situations that might otherwise lead to more problems. It's relatively easy reading and wastes few words making its points.

The book covers a lot of ground but could have covered more. Examples of people using the principles and the system successfully over a period of time could inspire readers to dig into these methods. Some contextual description of the way Recovery groups have operated for decades would have been welcome. But the high rating is based on how very useful these methods can be in clarifying challenging situations and developing responses that can defuse problems rather than exacerbate them.

For me, the format of Courtade's book was accessible and friendly because I got a key concept of the Recovery International method in a short period of time. In each brief, fifteen minute period I learned a new idea that helped with my mental health.

The book is especially useful for you if the Recovery International program seems to have some promise. You may try out many of the claims of that program in your life by reading Courtade's book and by applying the concepts of the Recovery Internatianal program to your situation.

The night life of the Gods

I read it about 50 years ago and I laughed a great deal, though my mother was scandalised more than somewhat that I was reading it. Nevertheless, I became a Thorne Smith fan and I found other books over the years that I have still managed to keep with me. But, never did I find this book and I am deeply grateful to Amazon for making it available in an affordable e-book.

As funny as ever!

I grew up reading Thorne Smith, courtesy of my mother who was addicted to his acerbic wit. I was delighted to see that this classic (my favorite of all of his books) was available on Kindle, and snapped up a copy right away. It's as funny as ever, and delights me still. If you don't know Thorne Smith's work, this is a great introduction.
