Wonderful Book! Leaves you feeling hopeful!

Having read many books on the subject I was struck at how unique this book was in comparison to others. While Max keeps his story to his experiences, through his eyes, it is a telling story of survival, cunning and just plain luck helped him survive four camps during the Holocaust. What is unique in this book is its continuation of his experiences after he was liberated and how he had to learn how to survive being out of the camps. I met the author recently and at almost 88 years old he still had a twinkle in his eye and is loved by his family. He has a compelling nature that when you meet him you feel welcome. He told me "enjoy each day of life". This is a book that you can't put down - it is a quick read - but your thoughts linger back to its contents for weeks after finishing.

Solid information is plentiful and more compacted in this book than in other books of this series I've seen, which I was extremely pleased about. I enjoyed learning about the types of pens and other tools manga artists use, as well as the cycle of writing, drafting and producing manga. The book also covers the basics of drawing characters, backgrounds in perspective.

I'd give the book five stars, but it has the problem of trying to balance technical information with kids stuff, such as how you'll get more respect from original artwork than badly copying other people's.

A Book that changes how you see things

After reading Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority, I have but one regret; It has challenged my role as a passive observer. It's now hard to laugh at black comedians and rappers who carelessly use the N-word or endorse sexual promiscuity and violence. I can no longer dismiss the impact of black films or TV shows that exaggerate black pathologies and buffoonery. With disturbing clarity, the author draws connections between what's deemed "black entertainment" today and what was yesteryear's promotion of vile, demeaning, violent and debased black stereotypes. From "Relationship Wrecks" to "Neo-Coons" and every chapter in between, Burrell details a masterful 18th Century propaganda campaign that has effectively imbedded the notion of black inferiority and white superiority in society. With concentrated focus, the author shows how blacks, as well as whites, have been unconsciously conditioned to expect black inadequacies. Not satisfied with simply identifying this insidious campaign, the author, a former advertising executive, compassionately details a "New Media" strategy aimed at reclaiming black minds and communities. There have been many authors (Norman Coombs, E. Franklin Frazier, bell hooks) who have explored the psychological damage wrought by slavery and oppression. Burrell's approach from an advertising/marketing perspective, however, offers valuable perspective in an increasingly media-driven and dominated society.

"Post-racial" America? - Here's why not.

Once I began to read Brainwashed by Tom Burrell it was difficult to put down. His explanation of how the purposeful destruction of slave families 150+ years ago has evolved into a self-perpetuating cycle that, if left unchecked, insures continued enslavement for years to come, is powerful. Burrell convincingly rebuts arguments that say the Black family was restored during reconstruction and that its decay is of more recent origin. Brainwashed invites the reader to check your guilt, leave your defenses at the door, and allow yourself to consider that we can all make choices to both be free and set each others free. As a professor of multicultural counseling at a Midwestern university, I added the book to my recommended reading list before I was halfway through reading it. I have also ordered a copy for the school library. This is a must read for those who long for a truly "post-racial" America.

Emotional Freedom for Black People!

I have purchased multiple copies of Brainwashed to share with my family and friends, and I intend to buy many more. This is a must-read book for Black people--and everybody else. There is a growing grassroots movement for emotional healing and renewal for Black people in this country and around the world. As part of the Community Healing Network, a group working for emotional freedom for Black people, I can report that Brainwashed is already at the top of our list of recommended readings. It is an important addition to the body of work describing the historical roots of so much of the pain we see and feel in Black communities today. Touching on nearly every area of Black life--from our physical and mental health to the health of our interpersonal, family, and community relationships, and more--Burrell shows how each has been undermined by the myth of Black inferiority. Along the way, he shares insights that can help us help ourselves. Brainwashed shows how the myth of Black inferiority has been skillfully marketed throughout American history and proposes a bold and creative campaign of reverse marketing to help change how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. What makes this book so important, from my point of view, is Burrell's focus on action through his Resolution Project, which is designed to use the media to replace the toxic messages that are part and parcel of the myth with new and positive images of Black people. Tom Burrell has made an indispensable contribution with the gift of an excellent resource for movement-building--and with his commitment, as a marketing expert, to use marketing to change the image of Black people.

Very simple and complete

This is just a very straight forward complete math curriculum. My son who hates math can get through this without the usually emotional breakdown. The lessons are one page with typically 20 problems. There are tests and a final exam. The child watches the video which is less than 10 minutes and then does the problems. We have honestly tried Math u see, Saxon, Teaching Textbooks and Video Interactive. This is the only one that doesn't require tears.

LOVE IT

I just went through this book to put together my 8th grade son's curriculum plan for the year. I went through the lessons/format etc and the reviews. This book is AMAZING. It really is basic algebra, the one-world language of math. LOVE IT. The crazy backwords crap they tried shoving down his throat (aka COMMON CORE NONSENSE) in our California public school system left him still confused and, though he passed the class with a B, he still feels like none of it is 'clear' in his head, and he gets re-confused when problems he hasn't done in a while are re-introduced (a problem he NEVER had before the common core movement). This is a GATE kid who knew his ABCs at 18 months old, and reads 3 grade levels ahead, and common core math confuses him (and me, I'm a college grade who LOVES algebra and even I don't get common core lol). So we are starting over, homeshooling this year, with good old fashioned regular old MATH, and this is PERFECT! Now he will remember it for life the way I do, and he'll do great in high school geometry & trig.

UPDATE!!!!
We are on to the second quarter, and he is doing so well. On units that are easy for him, we do one unit per day. On more difficult units, we spread it out to two days. Rarely, we'll spread it out to a third day. He's doing great. This book cannot be more simple, organized and straight-forward. It's not too easy, it is regular algebra, but there are no frills to distract or confuse. A couple of times we ran into their way looking different than our way, which we thought was easier (like greatest common factor, in unit one-review), so we did it our way. All the answers are in the back of the book so I can check his math work. They give you a website log-in with every book, so you can access their website for help or contact them, but we haven't had to use it. If you're a parent who doesn't know algebra, this will probably help a lot. :)
If he comes to a section that's a new concept or difficult for him, I'll sit down with him and we'll do the problems together but on our own separate papers. I'll say, ok what do we do next? And if he doesn't know that step, I'll explain it as I do it, and he listens and works the math problem as I guide him, explaining each step and why we're doinf it, and on the next problem I'll ask "what do we do next?" And he quickly gets it and tells me as he goes. Then we'll check our answers to see if we are right. That way, if he gets stuck, I know exactly where and why, and I can help him before he has a chance to feel overwhelmed or get upset.
This book could easily be spread out between two grade years. It would be perfect to start at 8th grade and go through 9th grade. Just count the number of total lessons in the book, divide the total school days (180 per year) by the number of lessons and you'll get how many school days you can spend on each lesson. Now that we're out of review and into straight algebra, one lesson per day is starting to look too rushed. They need lots of practice to get to know it like the back of their hand.
Every unit has lessons. The lessons have a page that explains the concept in words, then gives several examples. It's best to write the examples and tell yourself what they're doing while working it our yourself as you read it. Then you're ready to practice! AND at the end of each lesson, there are 4 review problems at the bottom on past lessons so they don't get rusty on past concepts but it's not overwhelming.

A good , complete, "middle of the road" curriculum that allows for independance

We came from FLVS and there was so much new math
and practical application it was confusing. I understand trying to get students
to see how math is applied to everyday life, but there was so much of that and not
enough review of concepts then you would get the whole summary at the end it
did not work for my daughters shorter focus.
We needed to get to the core formulas of math and
practice. In choosing this curriculum, No nonsense Algebra, My daughter read the reviews and we watched the
a few sample videos. She chose this curriculum over MUS and Saxon. For MUS , seeing
the instructor was a visual distraction for her, where in this curriculum
hearing the instructor's voice is fine for her. Also, the practice
problems are not as long as Saxon. With FLVS each concept
was in its own module, without daily review of concepts learned before. If the concepts weren't building
or sequential, she would forget what was learned in the beginning modules.Review was up to the student.
Or for final exam time, a big final review.
This curriculum is a good
"middle ground" for her. She likes the NO fluff, getting down
to using the formulas , working problems, and just enough review to keep her
remembering the concepts from one problem to the next.
She watches the video each day and so far gets the concepts, and
has liked being independent
asking for help when needed. I am glad this curriculum was recommended to
us by our tutor in Classical Conversations.

Definitive work

This is by far the best work every on Hitler's secruity and the various assassination plots against him. It's especially strong in the early, seminal years of the Nazi party and there are some extremely rare photographs of Hitler in Munich in the mid to late 20's. Hoffman's research is extensive and he unearths material not found in other books. He relies on primary sources for many of his arguments and these interviews enhance an already strong book. If you have an interest in Hitler's incredible knack in evading assassinations, this is the preeminent book on that subject.

Excellent review of assassination attempts on Hitler and methods used to protect him

This book is an excellent review of not just the means used to protect Hitler from the time of his early ascendancy in the Nazi party to the famous, but failed, 20 July 1944 assassination attempt and foiled coup, to the end of his life in the bunker in Berlin, but also discloses that Hitler, more often than realized and especially in the early days of the Nazi party, was not afraid to put himself in harm's way to advance his cause. It also portrays the many ways in which security differed, depending on the circumstances (e.g., public forum, touring car, plane) and the many layers or levels of security, often unknowingly working at cross-purposes.
