A must have for beginning daters.

Haha - I can't believe I ever needed a book with that title. Ah well, live and learn and move on. Anyway, I recommend this for all the males out there who think women have to date them in order for them to feel valid. You know, like that wacko who murdered those college students in CA and then committed suicide. He had the same stupid idea, that since he was "Mr. Wonderful" then all the women out there should be licking his, erm, "toes." Anyway, bottom line is, you can be totally hot and have other people not want to date you and still be hot. It's ok. They don't have to and it doesn't make you less of a person.

Highlights specifics in misconceptions that singles have pretty well

This book is about understanding the failures of singles perception about dating and finding a date. It does a good job, but the book title is slightly misleading, and I'll explain why I think this is. Susan Page walks through a lot of different scenarios about why couples either can not find love or can not maintain it, and throughout all of it, never goes into a whole lot of depth. She stays very broad on each of the topics (I understand depth would be difficult in this subject matter because who can say what someone really feels when you don't know someone). At the very end, she addresses a topic that I think the book's title addresses more directly than any of the single's mispercpetions - anxiety about finding someone to love. That topic at the end was in it of itself a subject of content for another entire book, but Susan dismisses it with something along the lines of "ease of mind comes in time". I think that all singles find that this is a difficult matter to resolve, and it would have helped if Susan had more to offer about this. Other than that, while I don't think the book was written with a psychiatrist/counselor's precision in explaining the failure stereotypes, I think that Susan definitely did a good job with her book.

This is an excellent work for anyone studying the English
language for the first time or for an English literature major.
Students of the English language will appreciate the exhaustive
delineation of the roots of words and word families.
In the area of city planning alone, the author provides
comparable Greek and Latin words alongside the standard
English. For instance, urbs and urbis means city.
Porta or portae means city gate. Domus or domi means house.
The work methodically reviews language families, the workings
of Greek and Latin, prefixes, government vocabulary and
vocabulary of the sciences and social sciences.
There are classic utilizations of the Latin in English.
For instance, "in principio" means in the beginning.
"Status quo" means the state in which something exists.
"Ad Infinitum" refers to infinity and "finis" is the end.
This work could be helpful to students studying Latin or
Greek because the author explains the foreign language
relationship to English. The work could be very helpful for
anyone desiring to improve his/her vocabulary. There are
numerous exercises throughout the text. These are designed

Useful very introductory textbook

I'd use this for either a high school level course wherre you do not actually want to teach student how to read or write in either Latin or Greek but you want them to appreciate the influence of those ancient cultures on modern English. The explanations are simple and there are worksheets throughout where the student can practice what was taught. I'd recommend photocopying the worksheets frankly so you can use it multiple times. Not a very good book if you are truly interested in learning Greek or Latin but great for preparing for SAT or ACT tests for college enterance exams.

A useful brief guide to practice

One of three short books by Landsberg on key skills for leaders and managers. The others are The Tao of Motivation and The Tao of Coaching. All three are notable for their directness and brevity and all provide an extremely useful guide to important skills. Each is written around a brief story about 'Alex', on his journey from manager to CEO, with each episode designed to illustrate some aspect of the coaching/motivation/leadership challenge. Each episode is followed by a two page summary of the particular skill needed to meet the challenge. Each book has a useful bibliography to guide the reader to more detail where desired and a suite of Appendices covering further details on key aspects of skill.
There is naturally some overlap between the books, but each is valuable in its own right and the set combine to provide a thoughtful, practical and readily referenced guide to the key elements in the human side of management and leadership.
The Tools of Leadership is written around a detailed exploration of the attitudes, skills and tools needed to be effective in building vision, inspiration and momentum and in balancing the use of these and the use of power.

How motivation works

"You have the key to motivate yourself and others" the opening of 'The Tao of Motivation' by Max Landsberg. The book is one of three in a series about leadership and management. The others are The Tao of Coaching and The Tools of Leadership.

The book is presented as a guide and uses the story of Alex and his struggle to become a board member to illustrate the theory behind motivation. (Alex is also the name of the manager in The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, coincidence?)

The book follows the learning process of Alex, the theory builds on previous chapters and the VICTORY-circle (Vision, Impetus, Confidence, Taking the Plunge, Outcomes, Responding to feedback, and of course 'You'). As in all things when working with people, just telling isn't enough: Show, don't tell. In order to be able to motivate others you must first learn how motivation works and how to motivate yourself. A number of subjects around motivation (psychology, NLP, Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator, body-language etc.) are briefly mentioned in the book. A reference list encourages you to further exploring.

I must say the book had an influence on me because I learned some new things about motivation. Because you want to read the life story of Alex you easily pick up the theory in between (don't skip it!). These kind of business novels are a nice way of learning new things.

A book that every human should read, regardless of age sex gender class ethnicity hair color

I have loved this book since I happened upon it in a random used bookstore in Seattle several years ago, cover all bent and torn and lots of illegible writing dispersed throughout the pages. This combines everything I love and need in this world. Angier is a fantastically talented writer, and can make a description of roadkill into a love story for the masses.

I did not plan to read this book. ... I wondered, as you might, how a whole book (that is not a reference book) could be written on women's bodies. Is it possible to make biology something intersting to read? I was amazed. I read the book in one weekend. It is almost like reading a novel where women's bodies are the main character. She doesn't pretend that she has the answers, but rather guides the reader on a journey through possibilities. She explores breasts-- what are they for...? how do the work...? Periods... our uterus... But doesn't "dumb it down," and use layperson's terms. We hear the "real" words for hormones and biological processes. But these things are so well woven into narrative accounts and insightful musings that even the most science-phobic person can get swept away in the magic of Angier's words without getting caught up in science-speak.
Why not five stars? Especially early in the book some of her musings wonder too far toward the "women could be genetically superior" line of thinking. I don't think she really means it, but rather doesn't close the door of wondering. However, I feel like it could scare off some readers and give those who want to keep women "in their place" good reasons to dismiss the book as a crazy feminist scientist. Don't let it scare you off, though. It seems to be Angier's attempt to balance things out a little-- if we have spent so much time musing about whether men could be superior, why not wonder about women, too?
This is a great book for both men and women who want to learn about and wonder about what goes on in women's bodies, and various ways that that can be understood.

Excellent book!! Beautiful writing and very interesting topic!

Majority of the knowledge you have about human body anatomy is probably from high school or college textbooks, and you will find most of those are focused mainly on male body anatomy. Natalie Angier explores different parts of female body with scientifically supported arguments, her own experiences, and stories of others with very beautiful manner of writing and some humors.

In our society, men tend to be overvalued even in the evolutionary theory of human anatomy. If females exist just for the reproduction, then they are useless once they pass a childbearing age. My favorite part of the book is when she challenges this aspect of the evolutionary theory with her ideas of the "grandmother hypothesis". According to her, back in ancient time when humans are out hunting and gathering food for our survival, men were the prior and women were the ones gathered food. Even when men successfully brought back good amount of food for their tribe, they did not get extra share for their own family members; and when that happened, females, as the gatherers, were the ones had capabilities to affect whether her children get enough food or not. However, when mothers needed help, there were grandmothers who were past childbearing age, still played very important role in bringing up the children. Basically what Angie was saying is that the stronger women were after menopause, the more likely her children (grandchildren) were to survive. So women are expected to live active lives even after menopause. This is from one of my favorite chapter "Mothers, Grandmothers, and Other Dames." It totally challenges the evolutionary theory of how females after menopause are useless. Unlike many other species such as chimpanzees and monkeys, human females have incredibly huge role as grandmothers. This is just one of the absolutely amazing chapters in a book, so if you are interested in explore more about women, this is definitely a must read book!

I would recommend everybody to read this book if you are interested in elevating your knowledge of women or have interest in feminism. But it is a must read for men as well, you will discover tons of information you had never known before. Even for women, do not just assume that being a female will just put you at the top of knowledge about yourself. This book definitely provides you absolute beauty of women's body and you enjoy and love it even if you are not fond of biology or science.
