A through guide covering Modern Portfolio Theory as well as the recent developments surrounding it

Modern portfolio theory (MPT), which originated with Harry Markowitz's seminal paper "Portfolio Selection" in 1952, has stood the test of time and continues to be the intellectual foundation for real-world portfolio management. This book presents a comprehensive picture of MPT in a manner that can be effectively used by financial practitioners and understood by students.

Modern Portfolio Theory provides a summary of the important findings from all of the financial research done since MPT was created and presents all the MPT formulas and models using one consistent set of mathematical symbols. Opening with an informative introduction to the concepts of probability and utility theory, it quickly moves on to discuss Markowitz's seminal work on the topic with a thorough explanation of the underlying mathematics.

  • Analyzes portfolios of all sizes and types, shows how the advanced findings and formulas are derived, and offers a concise and comprehensive review of MPT literature
  • Addresses logical extensions to Markowitz's work, including the Capital Asset Pricing Model, Arbitrage Pricing Theory, portfolio ranking models, and performance attribution
  • Considers stock market developments like decimalization, high frequency trading, and algorithmic trading, and reveals how they align with MPT
  • Companion Website contains Excel spreadsheets that allow you to compute and graph Markowitz efficient frontiers with riskless and risky assets

If you want to gain a complete understanding of modern portfolio theory this is the book you need to read.

Review

Francis and Kim review the works of a generation of financial economists and pull these together under a single set of mathematical conventions. Their writing style is easy-to-read and the chapters flow logically. The early chapters deal with the original material created by Markowitz, Tobin, and Sharpe whereas succeeding chapters deal with more recent developments. Readers who wish to avoid complex derivations and proofs may do so easily because the book is organized so this rigorous material is in the end-of-chapter appendices and footnotes. This work is comprehensive and accessible, and will reward either classroom or individual study. —Harry Markowitz, Nobel Laureate, Professor of Economics and Finance

From the Inside Flap

Modern portfolio theory (MPT), which was introduced by Harry Markowitz's seminal paper "Portfolio Selection" over sixty years ago, has stood the test of time. Both his original theory and extensions made to the model by Professors James Tobin and Bill Sharpe have won Nobel Prizes. Today, MPT has grown to impact portfolio managers, financial service organizations, individual investors, and the finance and economics classrooms of universities around the world.

Building on three previous editions of the book Portfolio Analysis, of which coauthor Jack Clark Francis was an integral part, Modern Portfolio Theory skillfully provides a concise review of portfolio theory and offers new insights. It can help busy finance professionals stay current on the theoretical developments in their field and allow students to gain a solid foundation in what MPT encompasses.

Divided into six comprehensive parts, this reliable resource addresses various aspects of portfolio analysis by tracing the contributions made by different people in the decades since MPT was created. Along the way, it also explores new developments that may make MPT more valuable than ever. Topics that are discussed in detail include:

  • Probability foundations
  • Utility analysis
  • Mean-variance portfolio analysis
  • Non-mean-variance portfolio analysis
  • Asset pricing models
  • Implementation of portfolio theory
  • Portfolio performance evaluations

And while this book uses mathematical and statistical explanations in its coverage of models and other subjects, the material is presented in way that is understandable to a wide range of readers—from finance veterans to those just entering the field—and supplemented with graphs.

The coauthors have also created several Excel spreadsheets that compute Markowitz efficient frontiers under various assumptions and circumstances. This user-friendly software is available online and can be easily downloaded. In addition, resources for professors can be found on Wiley's Global Education website.

Engaging and accessible, Modern Portfolio Theory contains essential insights on this discipline and offers a comprehensive look at its foundations, evolution, and implementation in today's dynamic world of finance.

Praise for Modern Portfolio Theory

"Francis and Kim review the works of a generation of financial economists and pull these together under a single set of mathematical conventions. Their writing style is easy to read, and the chapters flow logically. The early chapters deal with the original material created by Markowitz, Tobin, and Sharpe whereas succeeding chapters deal with more recent developments. This work is comprehensive and accessible, and will reward either classroom or individual study."
—Harry Markowitz, Nobel Laureate, Professor of Economics and Finance

"Professors Francis and Kim review the various models and research findings related to the original Markowitz portfolio theory. They compile many of the derivative works, drilling down on each topic, and, in the final analysis, pull together a unified portfolio theory using a single set of conventions. The Markowitz theory is central to portfolio management, and this book provides a thorough, up-to-date treatment of the topic."
—Roger Ibbotson, Professor of Finance, Yale University; founder, Ibbotson Associates

"Building on the foundation of the original Markowitz portfolio theory and the key derivative works that span the decades since 1952, Professors Francis and Kim have written a unifying, one-of-a-kind book on portfolio analysis. This book is well organized and easy to read. Francis and Kim review the theoretical underpinnings of the seminal models, as well as provide rigorous analyses of real-world applications, advanced mathematics, and empirical tests. In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, finance and risk professionals must do a better job in understanding the theory, applications, and limitations of financial models. This book represents a major contribution in this endeavor."
—James Lam, author, Enterprise Risk Management; President, James Lam & Associates, Inc.; past Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Manager, Fidelity Investments

Modern Portfolio Theory + Website puts an emphasis on practical application. To that end, this book provides readers with access to a companion website filled with supplementary materials, allowing you to continue to learn in a hands-on fashion long after closing the book.

A really good book
By Christos Giannikos
This is a book about the foundations of modern portfolio theory, but it goes further. It also delves into unexpected areas, like the VaR model of risk management, which rests on Markowitz's variance-covariance model. The material is written for readers with either practical or academic interest in financial economics. The choice of the material discussed cannot get closer to what is really important. And, the organization and reading ease make it accessible. Rigor is not sacrificed for accessibility and a lot of quite advanced material is presented in its full glory--sometimes in an advanced chapter (eg, Chapter 7) or in an end of chapter appendix. The book will be useful for both economics and finance students, and quantitative practitioners.
The book has no competition. It reviews numerous successes and limitations of portfolio models that have been developed during the decades since Markozitz's original contributions. Many numerical examples are placed throughout the book. Detailed references are plentiful. I think its structure can be helpful in carving out classes in portfolio theory, investments, and the economics of uncertainty-- from introductory to advanced levels.
A companion website contains downloadable Excel spreadsheets that perform quadratic programming to compute Markowitz efficient frontiers with nice graphs.
A high quality Instructors Manual with quantitative Q&A on each chapter is available from John Wiley & Sons.

Modern Portfolio Theory
By Richard W. Taylor, Professor of Finance, Arkansas State University
This is an excellent text on modern portfolio theory. Since I am familiar with the three previous editions of Portfolio Analysis, this is a superb update. The authors cover a wealth of material. Their coverage of Markowitz portfolio theory, CAPM, and APT is quite thorough and very readable. As noted in the Preface, several different groups could benefit from using this book including portfolio managers, hedge fund managers, financial executives, and financial engineers. The text is very flexible. For example, it could be used in an undergraduate course by assigning Chapters 1, Appendix to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, 16, and 18 and omit most of the footnotes and end-of-chapter Appendices. A more advanced course could use any of the chapters that fits the teacher's interests. Overall, this is a great addition to the available textbooks on portfolio analysis.

Review

"A few years ago, it was my pleasure to review for the TLE this book’s first edition, published in 2005…The present revised version is some 60 pages longer and contains several significant modifications.  As is true of the original, the book continues to be one of the clearest as well as the most comprehensive elementary expositions of discrete geophysical inverse theory.  It is ideally suited for beginners as well as a fine resource for those searching for a particular inverse problem.  Each algorithm is presented in the form of pseudo-code, then backed up by a collection of MATLAB codes downloadable from an Elsevier Web site…All examples in the book are beautifully illustrated with simple, easy to follow "cartoon" problems, and all painstakingly designed to illuminate the details of a particular numerical method." --The Leading Edge, July 2012

Solid, well-written text
By C. F. Waigl
This text was one of two books used for a graduate-level class iI attended for students of geophysics. The second textbook was Tarantola's.

Positive: The writing is very readable and the book is well organized. Prerequisite knowledge in statistics, linear algebra and vector calculus is summarised in appendices, which include exercises. The exercises throughout the book are well aligned with the difficulty level. Compared to Tarantola, the Aster et al. book is certainly more accessible for the novice, except for those with a background in pure mathematics. In addition to the exposition and exercises, the book also contains worked examples including, and this is a great plus, Matlab code that can be downloaded and run to follow along. The code is well written and comes with utility libraries that can then be used to work examples or even apply to research problems.

Neutral: The organisation of the material is very classical, starting with linear problems and treating non-linear problems. Some may prefer it this way. It happens that the class I attended used Aster et al. to cover the background material (ie, the appendices), then proceeded to general inverse problems through iterative methods using Tarantola, and finally returned to Aster to treat the linear case more in-depth. If I had to teach this class, I would probably do something similar and work through general, potentially non-linear problems before linear problems. The language and examples of Aster et al. are geared towards the seismologist or other solid-earth geophysicist, though there are some that allude to tomography.

Negative: The only potentially questionable choice is the total reliance on Matlab. I appreciate that this commercial software is widespread at least in US institutions, but the heavy use of custom-written Matlab code does reduce the usefulness of this book for those who don't have access to this programming environment.

I would give this text 4.5 points if I could. The 4-point score doesn't mean I'm not highly recommending it.

Good text
By Graduate Student
This book was required for my Inverse Theory class taught by Cliff Thurber, the 3rd author. Normally I don't like using the texts a professor has been a part of writing, but this text is very well written. It is easy to understand and gives many examples, which are nice when trying to do homework. The appendices also give a good background in information you will need to know for the class, which is much nicer than most texts that have no such information. Would suggest to anyone interested in parameter estimation.

Wish I found this book earlier
By orthogonal
I've spent the last year trying to teach myself inverse theory and wish I would have had this book from the beginning. Great explanations, logical progression of topics, good examples and sample MATLAB code. It has in my opinion the right amount of mathematical rigor for engineers and will get you going solving your own problems.

Brave New World (75th Anniversary Edition)From BBC Audiobooks America

Originally published in 1932, this outstanding work of literature is more crucial and relevant today than ever before. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller s genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 AF (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. A powerful work of speculative fiction that has enthralled and terrified readers for generations, "Brave New World" is both a warning to be heeded and thought-provoking yet satisfying entertainment."

On the “rez”… in New Mexico…
By John P. Jones III
Serendipity, and those unlikely threads connecting seemingly random events that inspire our reading habits. Remember the “Occupy Wall Street” movement? A brief flicker of resistance to the concentration of power in the existing social order. Quickly, and generally politely rolled up by those same forces of order. It was Amy Goodman’s NPR’s report, in 2011, on the “library” in Zoccotti Park, Lower Manhattan, and the mention of Brave New World Revisited that led me to re-read that classic from my ‘60’s reading. I found it amazingly prescient, and gave it 5-stars, plus. As for the original, first published in 1932, it was one of the first 20 books I had listed on my “have read” list, commencing in 1962. What pushed me to re-read Aldous Huxley’s original work was reading a reference to how much of the book was set in New Mexico, an enormous open-air reservation for “savages,” a fact that I had completely forgotten from the original read, back when I wasn’t really sure where the state was. Times have changed, as I have voluntarily (I think!) chosen to live in the “reservation.”

“Taos and Tesuque; over Nambe and Picuris and Pojoaque, over Zia and Cochiti, over Laguna and Acoma and Enchanted Mesa, over Zuni and Cibola and Ojo Caliente…” are all New Mexican place names mentioned by Huxley in one sentence; all so “exotic” and unknown to me in 1962, and now they are literally part of my landscape and reference frame. Why was New Mexico chosen, by this scion to a famous English family? Admittedly it is speculative on my part, and I would welcome comments, but Huxley associated with the Bloomsbury literary group and was a friend of D.H. Lawrence. Figure it was the Lawrence connection, whose remains are still vitrified, some 30 miles north of Taos that led Huxley to place a portion of his novel in this “exotic” location. I just finished reading David Robert’s The Pueblo Revolt: The Secret Rebellion That Drove the Spaniards Out of the Southwest which was led by a shaman from the San Juan pueblo, Popé. In Huxley’s novel, Linda, fresh from London, was left behind in New Mexico, would “go native,” and married a Popé.

Huxley’s novel is a dystopia, one of the two classic visions of the future, along with George Orwell’s 1984 that were de rigueur reading in the ‘60’s. Huxley’s vision was control through the “soft glove,” and, in general, seems to have been a truer insight that the brutal control depicted by Orwell. In “Brave New World” the family is obsolete. All children are “hatched,” that is, created in test tubes. Society’s objectives are stated on page 01: “Community, Identity, and Stability.” From birth, and even before, individuals are designated to a particular level in society; it is a rigid caste system. Drugs are the answer! Specifically “soma,” which seems to be modeled on mescal. The opioid addiction depicted in today’s headlines was foreshadowed by Huxley some 85 years ago. It is difficult to believe that Huxley, writing in the depths of the Great Depression, could have foreseen the mindless consumerism of today, and I smiled when reading the scene in which students are trained to have a horror of flowers and the open countryside since they are free, and would distract from the “duty” to consume, and help someone else “make a buck.”

In Huxley’s world, there were only two billion people. Overpopulation was a theme, somewhat, in BNW, but in “Revisited,” the author articulated his position with much more precision:
“Unsolved, that problem will render insoluble all our other problems. Worse, still, it will create conditions in which individual freedom and the social decencies of the democratic way of life will become impossible, almost unthinkable.” We are currently at seven billion, and the topic of overpopulation is largely ignored.

No question, Huxley was a visionary of the future problems of human society. In terms of his novel however, I felt that his characters were too wooden, and the action too contrived, including the ending. The reader, no doubt as intended, will identify with the outlier, Bernard Marx, who, rumor has it, had a bit too much alcohol poured into his test-tube when he was being “hatched.” Overall, I found the very straightforward exposition of society’s problems, including the promotion of politicians as well-marketed commodities, as set forth in “Revisited” to be the far better read. As for the original, 4-stars.

Huxley's World and Our Own
By Casey
Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World was published in 1932, a fact that is truly astonishing if you pick this novel up blindly. Set in a dystopian London, this book that I’d gladly describe as cinematic, follows future citizens through their nightmarish brave new world, with little to no resemblance to our own. While Huxley’s novel wasn’t specifically written for me and my literary tastes, I am continuously amazed by this book. Keeping the time that it was written in mind makes for a truly captivating reading experience as Huxley has managed to weave a story that’s timeless and interesting and terrifying all at once.
The protagonist of Brave New World is Bernard Marx, an outsider in this seemingly perfect world where everyone has their place. Although he was born an Alpha Plus, the highest tier in this New World’s society, he’s never felt that he fit in. He feels that he’s always had to fight for respect, whereas with any other Alpha, it’s automatically given. Despite this fact, he doesn’t particularly identify with the lower level Epsilon’s or any other caste, for that matter. Nor does he really fight against these social constraints. Bernard’s main companion is Lenina Crowe, a nurse in the “nursery” where all the lives in this world come from. Unlike Bernard, Lenina is only too happy to accept things the way they are.
The main idea of Huxley’s world seems to be to erase emotion and sentiment in its entirety. There’s no place for love or monogamy, for hate or passion, for any type of longstanding commitment or relationship, including family. This society thrives on logical thinking, therefore all evidence of history and deities have been erased. The closest thing to a belief system or god they have is Ford Company founder, Henry Ford, known for his innovation, vision of the future, and ability to get things done. Huxley’s choice of Ford as a messianic figure goes to show that the most important value of this world is production.
So why has Brave New World withstood the test of time? Why hasn’t it faded into obscurity like so many other dystopian novels just in the last ten years? I think there are two main reasons. The first, and the one that astounds me most about this book, is its timelessness. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this book was written and published yesterday. The language Huxley used is still incredibly modern and easy to read. That along with the ideas he fearlessly writes about, such as promiscuity and recreational drug use, aren’t something you’d expect from a book written in the early 20th century.
Secondly, there is the premise of the book. The idea of all of humanity being a godless, loveless people, is a challenging thought to say the least. On the other hand, it has restored my faith in our race. Surely, we’d never let this happen. And our steadfast faith is for the better, right? My conscience wants to say yes, but logic says we’d be better off without the sentiment. The fact that it got me thinking about these things is why this book is still relevant. It challenges everything we know and hold dear about humanity and the way we are.
All of that leaves the question; is Brave New World a good book? For arguments sake, I’m going to say yes. It wasn’t really my cup of tea, it’s not the best science fiction book ever written, and at times the science side of things is complicated and tends to drag on. However Huxley made his point here, which I think was to leave us with questions. What if this was the way things were? Cold, godless, ignorant and adolescent in many ways. This novel is so exceptionally well written that it held my interest despite the fact that it’s not something I’d choose to read outside of an academic setting. One of my favorite quotes was during Bernard’s introduction, which summed up Bernard’s character as well as any of us who have ever felt like an outsider. “Those who feel despised do well to look despising.”
In conclusion, I think I can easily say that Aldous Huxley was a visionary. He envisioned and created a world not entirely unlike our own, and fearlessly wrote about things that could make literary critics today shudder. Brave New World is an adventure, despite its like of action, and a poignant look at what exactly makes humans, human.

Dystopia Done Right
By Tom
A classic in dystopian literature. What makes Aldous Huxley's Brave New World so powerful is the extent to which society is planned out. Too many dystopian stories focus on how the planners of the new society fail to account for "human behavior." In this Brave New World people are experimented on from the very beginning to ensure that society is as peaceful as possible. Embryos are controlled to ensure different degrees of intelligence for each specific class within society. Behavioral psychology is used to guarantee that people are conditioned to avoid "dangerous stimulation" and be satisfied with their status. Everyone gets free sex to satisfy their own inner lust. Amenities are fully prepared by an all powerful state capable of adequately distributing resources. The system even prepares for anomalies by exiling them off to distant islands.

While the situation may appear immoral from our perspective, we can clearly see that the people are satisfied with the way things are. In fact, efforts taken by John to disrupt society result in anger. The argument between the Mustapha Mond and John illustrates how the "old traditions of the past" interfere with the utopia of the present. Everything has turned out for the greater good of all.

Morality for Humans: Ethical Understanding from the Perspective of Cognitive Science, by Mark Johnson

What is the difference between right and wrong? This is no easy question to answer, yet we constantly try to make it so, frequently appealing to some hidden cache of cut-and-dried absolutes, whether drawn from God, universal reason, or societal authority. Combining cognitive science with a pragmatist philosophical framework inMorality for Humans:Ethical Understanding from the Perspective of Cognitive Science, Mark Johnson argues that appealing solely to absolute principles and values is not only scientifically unsound but even morally suspect. He shows that the standards for the kinds of people we should be and how we should treat one another—which we often think of as universal—are in fact frequently subject to change. And we should be okay with that. Taking context into consideration, he offers a remarkably nuanced, naturalistic view of ethics that sees us creatively adapt our standards according to given needs, emerging problems, and social interactions.

Ethical naturalism is not just a revamped form of relativism. Indeed, Johnson attempts to overcome the absolutist-versus-relativist impasse that has been one of the most intractable problems in the history of philosophy. He does so through a careful and inclusive look at the many ways we reason about right and wrong. Much of our moral thought, he shows, is automatic and intuitive, gut feelings that we follow up and attempt to justify with rational analysis and argument. However, good moral deliberation is not limited merely to intuitive judgments supported after the fact by reasoning. Johnson points out a crucial third element: weimaginehow our decisions will play out, how we or the world would change with each action we might take. Plumbing this imaginative dimension of moral reasoning, he provides a psychologically sophisticated view of moral problem solving, one perfectly suited for the embodied, culturally embedded, and ever-developing human creatures that we are.

Review
“InMorality for Humans, Johnson has his hands on what counts in life: how moral appraisals are not separate from intelligence, aesthetic sensibility, flexibility, imagination, or creativity. In fact, that is how the book unfolds, by showing the interrelationship of these constructs. The end is human flourishing, respect for the unifying sensibilities of our experiences and their complexities, and a positive sense of well-being.” (Jay Schulkin, Georgetown University)

“Morality for Humans is a deep and important book on ethics and on the cognitive science of morality. Mark Johnson is a well-known founder of the movement for empirically responsible ethics that began in the early 1990’s, and in Morality for Humanshe manages to synthesize his seminal work on moral imagination, metaphor, analogical reasoning, and practical problem-solving with deep thinking about how morality connects with the larger project of living meaningfully, with purpose, in a way that matters and makes a difference. At a time when too much moral psychology is absorbed with brain scans of college students solving ecologically invalid dilemmas about runaway trolleys, Johnson’s is a mature work that examines morality in the human ecologies in which it resides and provides wisdom about the contours of a good human life.” (Owen Flanagan, author of Varieties of Moral Personality)

“Morality for Humans is an original work of philosophy, soundly researched and clearly argued. Johnson effectively critiques our traditional views of morality and moral reasoning as seriously flawed because they rely on faulty and outdated views of human nature, moral psychology, and reasoning. He provides instead a stimulating picture of morality as involving open inquiry that requires imagination rather than fixed, absolute rules. Johnson is a distinguished philosopher, and this book represents a worthy addition to his corpus and to philosophical reflection on the important relations between embodied mind and morality.” (Richard Shusterman, author of Thinking through the Body)

“A stimulating book for its ability to weave together philosophy, ethics, and scientific data.”
(Choice)

“A welcome renewal and defense of John Dewey's ethical naturalism, which Johnson claims is the only morality ‘fit for actual human beings.’ The book straddles the divide between questions in moral psychology—What values do we have? Where did they come from? What role does reason play in moral deliberation?—and questions of normative and metaethics—From where do values get genuine normative authority? How do we properly rank our values when they compete with each other? These questions weave together throughout the book. . . . . He has set the stage for a promising dialogue, and we can look forward to his future contributions to the conversation.” (Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews)

“Traditionally, moral reasoning has been seen as a matter of conscious analysis—to identify pre-existing moral principles and then apply them. Cognitive science reveals that this cannot be correct, since much moral thinking happens subconsciously. As a result of experiments in moral psychology, many scientists have concluded that intuitive judgements come first, followed later, if at all, by rational justification. That's fine as far as it goes, says Johnson. But he recognises a key third process, which he calls ‘imaginative moral deliberation’—and this is where his real insight comes.” (New Scientist)

“An excellent choice for any philosopher seeking to understand what it is like to navigate moral terrain with the eye of a cognitive scientist, or for any cognitive scientist wishing to apply his knowledge to pragmatist ethics.” (Review of Metaphysics)

Great Work
By John
Johnson has done a really nice job with his latest book. He brings together a lot of the most interesting cognitive science research in the decade, and presents a really grounded view of human morality that makes a lot of sense. If you are interested in ethics, and particularly, are interested in views that hold up with a 21st century understanding of our minds, I would highly recommend it.

Good for a beginner/intermediate
By Rebecca Yoder
I have only basic sewing experience but have wanted to know how to sew my own bras for some time. This book sets out to explain how.

WHAT I LIKED:
The focus of the book is pretty much summed up by the title - Construction and Fitting. It is written in very simple, easy to understand terms and walks you carefully through the steps of sewing a bra pattern together. A large part of the book is devoted to explaining common fitting problems you may encounter as you sew and how to correct them. Note that it does NOT include any patterns nor instructions for drafting your own pattern - it just walks you through altering/sewing a ready-made bra pattern.

The sewing instructions are written at a level suitable for anyone who knows the basic stitches of a sewing machine; it does not require an advanced seamstress to understand. At the same time the instructions are very thorough and will offer a professional result if followed carefully. If you have never sewn a bra but want to, this book will get you there.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
There were not nearly enough pictures. Although the instructions were thorough, I like to have pictures/diagrams to reference. It kind of comes across as cheap without them. Also, I would have loved a section on how to draft a bra pattern or block from body measurements. I also would have liked a section on how to do major pattern alterations, such as converting a darted cup to a three-piece cup, a full-frame bra to a frameless etc. Those two additions would make this the perfect book for me.

Finally, (although it doesn't relate to the content of the book) this book was very poorly edited. In fact, I'm not sure it ever crossed an editor's desk. Typos and missing words abound. While all instructions were still understandable, it gives the book an unprofessional and cheap air. Just because it is a Kindle-only edition is no reason to skip the basic publishing process.

Perfect book for amateur bra makers
By NewToTheseParts
I just gobbled this book up, it's so easy to read!

"Demystifying" is the perfect title for this book, because that's exactly what it does. It walks you through fitting and sewing a bra with lots of great info and tips, but it doesn't feel dense and there are lots of diagrams to help. I loved that the construction steps are laid out so well, that it will be perfect to use as a reference when I get stuck on one step or another.

I didn't give it the full five stars because I couldn't see the pictures very well on my Kindle, and I would have loved to see some fitting pictures. [Edited to add: I have a old e-ink kindle, the pictures probably display fine on a colour screen]. I would happily buy a physical book version if it was available. Other than that, it is the perfect manual for people who love to sew to jump in to the world of sewing bras.

No Good for Kindle or eReader
By Allan
Tables are far too small to read even on an iMac. Figures are few and far between and a terrible colour for the samples. This yellow is impossible to view in any detail on a computer screen and the photos are far too small. The figures show a 'final' result. I would have expected far more pictures showing the steps of the construction for each method. The syntax of the sentences is grammatically poor. The text continually refers you back and forth between construction sequence and the techniques section with no hyperlinks. This means you are constantly flipping and/or searching for the right place in the book. The construction Sequence section is terrible. It should give an example of a particular pattern rather than give instructions and then contradict those instructions by merely saying finish by your preferred method or by pattern method. How do you know what a preferred method is if you haven't learnt to make a bra yet? In summary I was very disappointed in this book; not only in layout; navigation; use of language and poor, small or lacking appropriate photos or diagrams. I cant honestly believe any ratings given by customers over two stars of which there are many.

Dozens of such pairs offer a psychological mirror to serious readers.

Told in an instructive and entertaining narrative, the author takes the reader through the trading concepts with a clarity and ease of understanding. A must read for beginning and intermediate level traders.

-Dr. Chris Kacher, co-founder of www.SelfishInvesting.com and co-author of "How We Made 18,000% in the Stock Market"

You have done a truly tremendous job with this book! A breezy read with essential trading advice. I think this book could become a trading classic! So many great rules are offered in this book, but I think my favorite might be Chapter 8's. It is SO true! Just printing out the title of each chapter and putting it on your desk would greatly benefit every trader I know. Steve, you've done a great job!

-"Darrin Donnelly, DarvasTrader.com".

Steve Burns has done a superb job with his new book "New Trader, Rich Trader"! This is a must read for all levels of traders. Golden nuggets include important concepts like "I always put capital preservation before capital appreciation." Steve tackles psychology, risk control, and what it takes to succeed in this business where so many fail. As Steve says "most new traders learn the hard way by losing money...", don't be one of them, do yourself a favor and buy this book, because not only is it a great investment, but the concepts in this book will save you plenty!

-Bennett McDowell, Founder, TradersCoach.com Author: "A Trader's Money Management System: How to Ensure Profit and Avoid the Risk of Ruin"

Steve Burns describes three of the most critical aspects of trading with a "dialogue-style' book between a novice trader and an experienced successful trader. Psychology - making sure your mindset is correct and in the game with a solid, realistic, and objective plan. Risk Management - the key to it all and ones ability to understand and manage all aspects of risk control. Methodology - making sure you fit a trading plan to your own unique style while understanding what prior successful traders did as well. The teacher/student lessons discussed should be of value to all traders.

-John Boik, author of "How Legendary Traders Made Millions" and "Monster Stocks"

Steve has crafted an easy-to-read tutorial on avoiding the most common mistakes made by new traders. Save yourself years of heartache and buy this book and do your homework. New Trader, Rich Trader should be mandatory reading for the novice investor.

A Must For Would Be Traders
By Clarence Oliver
New Trader, Rich Trader is an impressive work on the vast array of trading literature available in the world. The book is full of information that every beginning and intermediate trader can and should use to better their trading results. Trading can be one of the most rewarding and nerve racking things anyone can do. I've made and lost tons of money in the market, I've had the hair pulling experiences of watching profits turn into losses, and the exciting experience of coming back from those losses, and making massive profits. I've shorted BP, and I've gone long stocks that have jumped up hugely, and I've had the reverse happen as well.

When I started I watched half my money vanish in the matter of a month or so. With this book, I'm quite certain that that wouldn't have been the case. Steve Burns is showing himself to become part of the ranks of other great writers of the market , like Michael Covel and Dr. Alexander Elders. This book has simple rules and instructions, basic things that aren't so basic that anyone who follows them will see better results, and get to skip that horrible and painful couple of years of suffering losses.

I highly recommend it.

An Essential Trading Pocketbook
By John Liu
This is by far one of the best trading pocketbook which covers all the essentials of successful trading. It's so different from other books in that this one is instilling essential trading principles by telling a imaginative story between a new trader and a rich trader. But if you think it over while you enjoy this book, you'll be very surprised and shocked that this book may be telling your story, to some extent, that either happened in the past or is happening at the moment.

Many people are misguided by info surrounding us which are provided for a purpose and believe that the most important part of successful trading is picking up the right stock. They think that's the holy grail of success in trading. However, that's actually the least important part of trading. There's no such a stock that's called the right stock. Instead, we should be more dedicated to working on ourselves and the trading system that fits us, which corresponds to what the author is trying to emphasize in this essential trading pocketbook, namely psychology, risk, and methodology. This book might reads simple to many experienced traders, but even they will acknowledge that this book do cover a lot of essential principles for trading success. For new traders, this is absolutely an excellent trading pocketbook to start with. You'll usually see yourself as the new trader in the book and learn what you should work on to keep yourself on track.

This book is absolutely one of the best that you can use to build a solid foundation for your future trading success if you are serious about this business, have a faith in it and would like to commit to it. From here, you will establish a big and clear picture first and then you can move on to explore those areas that you wish to fine tune in order to develop a trading system that truly fits you and makes profits consistently.

Great for newbies, rookies, beginners and anyone needing help.
By Stephen Shull
I began trading about five years, with a low six figure account, mostly for grins. The majority of my retirement assets were handled by "professionals." You know, one of those companies that has an office in every town. I was subscribing to "Investors Business Daily" for some help. Then came 2008 into 2009. The "professionals" had lost over HALF of my seven figure retirement account, with their buy and hold and hold and hold plan. I took over my retirement acct. in 2013. Needing more help, with so much more at stake, I purchased this book. It is fantastic for the beginner. It doesn't tell you WHAT to buy and sell. It tells you HOW to buy and sell. Specifics on the DO's and psycho. logyTs of trading strategies. It covers the psychology of trading, risk management and many helpful ideas. Easy reading and GREAT BOOK!!!
