Seems fair enough,...

it is w hat it is.
can't review the writing or plots because most of the stories are famous as is. Generally, it is a good enough compilation and the translation is acceptible. My only complaint is that it would be nice if they added anote somewhere if a story is known by a different title. For example, thestory now know as Sleeping Beauty is entitled Briar Rose here and you don't realize what it is until you're half done. It's a minor complaint, but otherwise it's good to see the historical version of these tales - and to see some that I haven't known before as well.

In my opinion, most of these are better in their "newer" versions, but it is still nice to see what's been changed.

needs improvement but has a fighting chance

It is well written and rather student friendly but I will not say that it is an ideal choice. My major complaint is that the examples that the author works in the text which are scant understandable are nothing similar or very, very trivial compared to some of the homework problems (although some are quite trivial themselves). Several of the Chapter 9 z-transforms are basically just a very nasty excuse to swing the algebra hammer. I would suggest using Matlab or Mathematica before you give up in frustration.

That being said this text could have been much, much worse. I did particularly like approach of presenting the Laplace Transform as a generalization of the Fourier Transform, and the Z-transform as a generalization of the DTFT, and also how sampling ties both domains together and creates the problem of aliasing in the frequency domain and unique signal reconstruction in time domain. Ideally I wonder if sampling might be presented in conjunction with the DFT however I recognize why the Roberts choose his layout as such. I also wish he had pointed out (in BOLD WORDS) that the roots of the characteristic equation of a linear, nth order differential equation are the growth factors of the exponential terms in the fundamental solution and are exactly the location of the poles in the complex s-plane of the transfer function.

There are of course several other pedagogical complaints with the textbook but I differ. I will say that it much better than most of the competition though (Haykin, Poularikas, Hsu, etc.). Haven't read the Oppenheim, Willsky and Nawab book although I am aware of it. Something about having a student buy a 957 page book seems wrong.

I should point out that the binding on this particular edition is well done. Great job McGraw-Hill!

Quantitative Methods APPLIED to REAL problems

Basically agree with the other reader. This is the book for practitioners and students alike. To me, it was very refreshing reading a book which is "down to earth" but still captures the "essence" of quantitative finance. Where else can you find Taylors series applied to estimate bond price changes step by step? Some stuff is pretty basic, but the authors manage to cover advance quite rapidly (e.g. cointegration, GARCH, optimization). Nefti's book on derivatives is very difficult for non math guys (if not impossible), but Wilmott's isn't much easier either.

To build a strong foundation

It is one book that covers a wide range of basic to intermediate level concepts that are essential for any quantitative finance practitioner, financial analyst, portfolio manager and derivative traders. The book assumes some very basic mathematical background. Throughout the book the authors seem to have deliberately relied on basic algebra rather than complex integration and differentiation -- except in some relatively advanced topics that are covered in final few chapters of the book. I highly recommend reading this book to build a solid background of mathematics that is now commonplace in finance.

A scholarly, thorough review of Tudor politics and society.

John Guy is a fine scholar and an adequate writer. His analysis of Tudor society and government thoroughly convinces the reader of his sound understanding of Tudor history.
At points he assumes his audience has more knowledge of Tudor policitics than this reader had. He analyzes membership and conflicts in the Privy councils in more depth than most people reading for pleasure will want. But the work will, on balance, entertain and fascinate any patient reader with its many perspectives on those famous Tudor monarchs.

Fantastic description of the whole period

This book is excellently written, and will really appeal to anyone who is interested in the Tudors. Professor Guy's book is essential for anyone wishing to study this period, as this one volume covers religion, politics, society and the economy. He has a good style of writing and each topic flows smoothly into the next, giving a valuable insight into both the policies and the characters in this period.

Masterful survey of Tudor history

In the preface to this book, John Guy states that one of his aims in writing it was to provide "a clear narrative account of the period of English history from 1460 to the death of Elizabeth I in a manner equally accessible to the general reader and to the student." In this the book is an unqualified success; though the author presumes some familiarity with the era, it is a great narrative of England during their reign, presenting complex events in a straightforward and comprehensible manner.

Guy's focus is primarily on political and religious themes of the period, though he includes chapters on the economy, society, and culture as a means of fully developing his argument. Such an approach is understandable, given that the development of the state is one of the major events of 16th century England. The key figure in this, as with so much else in Tudor history, is Henry VIII, whose innovations would be felt for the remainder of the century.

Written with clarity and wit, Guy's book is the best single-volume history of the Tudor era. My only complaint is that, given his other professed goal of offering a synthesis of current research, a new edition is needed to maintain the book's usefulness as a survey account. I can only hope that Guy does so before too many readers dismiss what is otherwise an excellent overview of Tudor rule.

A good introduction to the history of economic ideas

I like this book. It covers the basics of economic thought from the Ancient World to the present day. I especially liked his treatment of the development of modern economics, and how it came to be so heavily mathematical. But the urge for clinical detachment by economists will never quite take hold, as economics is a deeply emotional subject. Economics taps into our primal instincts for survival.

A much more detailed book on the rise of mathematical economics is "How Economics Became a Mathematical Science" by E. Roy Weintraub.

Wouldn't get an A on a high school project

I have read only a bit more than ten percent of the Kindle edition of this book, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. It's not that it's completely worthless; it provides some context, but statements such as this one from very early in the book give pause:

"By Aristotle's time it was widely accepted that all things were built up from common units (atomism). Geometry was based on point, arithmetic on the number '1', and so on to the physical world. It was believed that this meant that different phenomena were commensurable in the sense that they could similarly be expressed as ratios of whole numbers. This was why it had been a great blow to the Pythagoreans to discover that there were irrational numbers like 11 or 2 that could not be expressed as ratios."

Now it's possible that the author had written the square root of 2 instead of "11 or 2" but even so a mistake as glaring as this one should never appear. It causes one to have grave doubts about the accuracy of the rest of the book.

Accuracy aside, though, the writing seems to have been thrown together from random thoughts and not had the benefit of carefully editing. It's not that the random thoughts are completely unorganized, just that they don't seem to do much in the way of presenting an organized presentation. The quotation above is typical.

So. Accuracy in doubt and a bit casual in approach. I can not recommend it.

Disappointing, Inaccurate, and Ideological

This is a very disappointing book. The author skims some of the most important developments in modern economics like the Real Business Cycle theory and barely delves into rational choice while spending an inordinate amount of time discussing both the Marxist and Austrian schools of economics which are very minor heterodox traditions. The author also wastes many pages discussing the economic ideas of Xenophon, Plutarch, French physiocrats, and numerous mercantilist thinkers who should be lost to history. The book should have weighed more on the economic developments of 1860 to the present day.

The book makes numerous inaccurate statements. When discussing people complaining about "high and discriminatory" freight rates in the Midwest during the arguments of anti-trust he doesn't spend a second to actually analyze the economics of those claims which turn out to be false. He claims that resources are becoming more scarce when, since I assume the author is educated in economics, means that the price of many resources should be going up over the long run. As Julian Simon shows, the opposite is occurring over the long run - especially when you measure the output of those resources like the price per BTU. The author claims that the socialist calculation debates ignores institutions. Much of that debate focused on the existence and variety of institutions between socialist and capitalist economies. The author ignored the economic success of Hong Kong when discussing the "strong and authoritarian governments" of East Asia like Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore (not authoritarian) that developed as if development requires authoritarianism. The author ignored the pro-free market and non-racist/authoritarian development economist P.T. Bauer who was right in his critiques of mainstream development economics DECADES before anybody else event thought critically of development aid. Gordon Tullock is not "right-wing" as the author claims.

The book is also unfortunately ideological. The author points out whenever an economist is right-wing but rarely when he is left-wing. It's annoying and doesn't expose anything except the author's ideological predilections.

Overall, this book isn't worth reading if you want a good history of economic thought.
