Has there ever been a better subject for a Dorling Kindersley book? Clearly, the DK approach of melding free-floating illustrations with supportive text is ideally suited to an instructional guide on hand reading--the bigger and clearer the pictures of the hand's life lines, fate lines, etc., the easier it will be to grasp this essentially visual subject. The DK illustrators are up to the challenge, supplying a cornucopia of hands, fingers, and thumbs to illustrate not only the lines on the palm but also the different designs of the hand itself--shape, size of fingers, the hand's overall topography. Sidebars offer a wealth of snappy background information (how to make a handprint, for example). The only weakness here is Reid's text, which too often seems overly simplistic: lots of lines indicate a high-strung personality; few mean a calm nervous system. Now there's a surprise. Still, if it's detailed pictures of hands you're after, DK is the place to go. Ilene Cooper

Reviewer: Psychic Vickiveil from Cincinnati, Ohio United States Terrific Palmistry book here. The photos are mainly life size, as well as in color. When Lori goes into description on any certain line or aspect of a line, you have the photo example of the palm, rather than a hand drawn black and white scribble. Ever try to locate a fine line on your hand from a cartoon style drawing?!?! It will certainly throw away your interest in palmistry fast! I wished I would have saved time and money by purchasing this book right off the bat. Being hardcover, large size, and photos of real hands, makes it easy to learn and locate the lines on your hands or a friends hands while still holding the book open on the table or your lap. The only reason I didn't rate this book a 5 star is because I do wish they would have went more into descriptions of the variations that can take place in the lines. They touched on this subject more so than any other palmistry book. However, since I did find this remarkably informative, I think what I am looking for isn't going to come inside any book. So outside of this book coming with a live teacher for the student! I think you will find it one of the best available! The book even presented sample readings along with the wonderful visual guides.

This book has great illustrations!

I thought that this book had an easy way of showing me on how to become more proficient in the arts of palmistry. Everyone wanted to borrow it from me. It explained things more with the pictures and illustrations, than any other of the books I have read on this subject. I would like to recommend this book for anyone who is interested in palmistry. This book is excellent!

Clearest book on Palmistry out there

I've got several books on Palmistry, and this one stands head and shoulders above the rest -at least, for those relatively new to the art. This is not meant to be some advanced text for the expert looking for more unusual, esoteric interpretations; it does what it was designed to do extremely well. For the vast majority of people interested in the subject, it will be the only book on palmistry they'll ever need.
It's primary advantage is it's employment of full color photographs. Visual aides are extremely important in properly getting across the widely varying physical elements of something like palmistry, and where most books fail, it's due to using overly simplified and frankly, unrealistic drawings. Most hands in the real world do not fit so neatly into the template of an idealized hand drawing. This book however, is much clearer and does a better job of conveying it's information clearly. Why don't the other books do this?
The information is also doled out at a logical and comfortable pace for the beginner, and things are neatly organized. It was a joy to read and learn from.

About the Author
Arunabha Ghosh is a lead member of technical staff in the Wireless Communications Group in AT&T Laboratories. He received his B.S. with highest distinction from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur in 1992 and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 1998. As a technical member at AT&T Labs, Dr. Ghosh’s primary area of research is mobile wireless systems, with particular emphasis on MIMO-OFDM systems. Dr. Ghosh has worked extensively in the area of closed-loop single-user and multiuser MIMO solutions for technologies such as LTE and WiMAX and has been an active participant in many standards bodies such as 3GPP, IEEE, and WiMAX Forum.

Jun Zhang is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received his B.Eng. in electronic engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2004, his M.Phil. in information engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2006, and his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. He was an intern at AT&T Labs in the summers of 2007 and 2008.

Jeffrey G. Andrews is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is the director of the Wireless Networking and Communications Group. He received his B.S. in engineering with high distinction from Harvey Mudd College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Andrews has industry experience at companies including Qualcomm, Intel, and Microsoft, and is the co-recipient of three IEEE best paper awards and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award.

Rias Muhamed is a director of business development with the AT&T Corporate Strategy and Development Team. His area of focus is on developing and incubating new business applications and services for AT&T using emerging technologies. He was previously with AT&T Labs, where he led technology assessment of a variety of wireless communication systems. He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Pondicherry University, India in 1990; his M.S. in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1996; and his M.B.A. from St. Edward University in Austin in 2000.

Good info, overly detailed

I am an RF Engineer, tasked with optimizing the radio link between the phone and the tower (or in LTE terminology, the User Equipment and e-Node B). Admittedly, this is the first BOOK about LTE I have read. Without other perspective, I give it a 3 star rating because of how useful it will be to me in my role. This is a great reference text for LTE--detailed as it is--on the background considerations and ALL the possibilities and thought that went into the LTE standard, but it's really over my head! It has little information, probably quite understandably, about vendor implementation and how to solve practical issues. What I needed to learn from the book could be reduced to 50 pages instead of 383, that's why I'll keep it on my shelf as a reference text, just in case. But otherwise I've taken extensive notes, which is really all I need.

The author(s) is a good teacher; he keeps re-expressing relevant points previously covered at the appropriate time in each lesson, and gives good summaries at the end of each chapter. The book is thoroughly indexed, and the text of each chapter points the reader to where other matters are more fully explained in other chapters/sections. Though it has a very useful list of acronyms, about 10 important acronyms are not on the list (an oversight by the editors). But the book could really benefit (I could really benefit) from also having a glossary, it would be worth extending the page count to 400. I suggest others on my level take advantage of the authors pedagogical style and the book's index in the following manner: start with the summary at the end of each chapter and if you see something you want to dig into, then go into the chapter for more details or use the index to find the actual lesson. By this means you can extract the most information with the least investment of time. Not all books are written well enough to use (or trust) this method to cover the material. This one is.

Excellent book on LTE

I ordered this book in Kindle format, but read it on the Cloud Reader app. The book is an excellent introduction to the lower layers of the LTE standard, explaining many things that are scattered throughout several standards documents. It can provide one with a firm basic understanding of the way LTE works, which makes reading through the standards documents for the PHY, MAC, etc. that much easier.

We use this book and Goldsmith's book as textbooks for wireless communications. It gives a brief but clear description while Goldsmith gives a detailed calculation which is a perfect combination.

Howard Grief first carried out an academic study until he found the most fitting answer. For about 400 years, the Ottoman Empire ruled over all the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa. The struggle for the liberation of those areas began in the Balkan lands at the beginning of the nineteenth century and ended in 1913. In the First World War, the job [of liberation] was completed and Turkey was reduced to the Anatolian Peninsula. All of this was contained in the San Remo Agreement of April 1920. The fact that it was precisely at that place and time that Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and the states of the Arabian Peninsula obtained [thanks to the victory of the Principal Allied Powers over the Central Powers] the very same liberation from the Ottoman yoke strengthens the approach of Grief who presents the proof for the inclusion of Palestine [i.e., the Jewish People] in the list of beneficiaries in regard to the “settlement [or disposition] of the inheritance of the Ottoman Empire.” Grief has found the true and most effectual lever for our basic case, and I am convinced that his approach deserves to be utilized [in presenting our case to the world.]

Superb. Lays bare so much propaganda & revisionist history.

This excellent detailed study by Professor Howard Grief addressing both Israel's legal foundation and borders is an absolute must read. The culmination of 25 years of study addresses a plethora of issues including the San Remo peace conference & a detailed appraisal of the Palestine Mandate, including its original intent, interpretation and application.

The study pulls no punches in showing that the Balfour Declaration, Mandate and League of Nations were intent upon the rebirth of not just a Jewish national home but a Jewish state based upon a historical formula founded upon the 1st/2nd Temple period territories, including lands up to the Litani Valley in present day Lebanon. The present borders of Israel are shown to be clearly not those originally designated for the Jewish people by the aforementioned international agreements.

Detailed reference reveals how it was originally agreed between Britain & France that the borders of a Jewish Palestine would be based on the historical or Biblical formula, "from Dan to Beersheba", a phrase appearing several times in the Bible.

This shown to have been interpreted up until 1920 by Prime Minister Lloyd George & other British officials to mean that Palestine would include all the lands or regions historically associated with the Jewish People. That is all territory which at one time or other was conquered, settled & governed by the Israelites in the 1st /2nd Temple periods.

The historical formula for determining these boundaries was accepted at the San Remo Peace Conference & referred to to in the Mandate Charter, which referred to the historical connection of the Jewish People with Palestine. The British themselves relying on George Adam Smith's "Atlas of the Historical Geography of the Holy Land", published in 1915, in particular on Plate No. 34 that depicted the territory under David and Solomon.

The book makes sobering reading as the British are shown to have not abided by their obligations under the Mandate, instead giving precedence to their own political self interests, regional expedience & their relationship with the Arab/Islamic world. The influence of French interests in the region also playing a considerable part as Western entities reneged upon their responsibilities & obligations pertaining to a Jewish home/state in what was Palestine.

The reader is shown how international agreements then made & still make it quite clear today, that Israel had/has a perfect legal right to settle land in the disputed territories in 1967, since this was the right assigned to the Jewish people under International Law. Law which continues to be in force despite the political nuances of today which are expedient to the larger pro-Arab international community.

Self serving political machinations & expedience are again shown when, under Article 5 of the Mandate Britain - which was not allowed to partition the land - Britain then did so by severing 77% to create the Arab state of Transjordan which, from the moment of its creation, was closed to all Jewish migration and settlement - a clear betrayal of the British promise the tones of which resound even now.

Under Article 6 of the Mandate Britain,was supposed to encourage Jewish immigration % settlement all over the now disputed territory - a Jewish right which exists to this day under International Law, despite the Mandate treaty's enactment in 1948.

Yet Britain is shown to have reneged upon this responsibility too. British foreign policy of the time, extending to the present day, shown to be that of appeasing the Arab/Islamic world as it appears to continually sacrifice Israel upon the altar of political expedience.

In November 1938 the British 'Cabinet Committee For Palestine' held a meeting which effectively resulted in the reneging upon of the Balfour Declaration & the League of Nations Mandate. Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax, told the Committee that "the Government would have to choose between it's commitments to the world of Jewry & it's commitments to the world of Islam..." It was subsequently decided that Britain could not afford to antagonise the Muslim world. This resulted in the British White Paper of 1939 which served to appease the Arab/Islamic world & severely restricted Jewish immigration to Palestine. This was the British policy as the Holocaust descended upon the Jews of Europe.

It is virtually impossible to do justice to the vast amount of evidence available in this 700+ page study. I can but highly recommend this work to anyone interesting in the Jewish state, the Arab-Israeli conflict & the manner in which the latter is portrayed/perceived in our day.

With such a vast array of facts at your fingertips the individual is left to ponder a number of issues. Not least being how the international community has seemingly side-stepped history & embraced the creation of a Palestinian state in territories promised to the Jewish people & to which they have a heritage spanning many thousands of years. The prerequisite of such a state's creation being the removal/ethnic cleansing of the entire Jewish presence from these areas.

With due reference to the contents of this study, the conviction that Jewish settlements in the West Bank are illegal is now so commonly accepted, it hardly seems as though the matter is even open for discussion. Such a case is blown completely out of the water by reference to the factual history. Though routinely referred to nowadays as "Palestinian" land, at no point in history has Jerusalem or the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) been under Palestinian sovereignty in any sense of the term.

In the face of skilfully orchestrated revisionist history and a tidal wave of anti-Israeli propaganda, this compelling account shows the reader is shown how the public is clearly being completely and utterly deceived by the manner in which the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is being presented to them. This is a book that desperately needs to be read & re-read. International leaders, including those within Israel itself, need to avail themselves of the information provided here.

Howard Grief has written the definitive volume on Israel and its relation to the seemingly fluid thing called "International Law." He documents the division of the Middle-East after WW1 and how and why the Jews were given Palestine. The book is cleanly presented -- being divided up into five sections -- and is sourced meticulously.

No doubt some will go the usual route and resort to calling it "Zionist propaganda", but it is difficult to not be a Zionist after seeing, through this book, the massive injustice being done to the Jews and their state.

As said, the book has 5 sections: the origins of Jewish legal rights, why those rights are still valid, how they became obscured, and now, denied, the usurping of the Palestinian national identity by Arabs who had previously despised the term, and how the Arab-Israeli conflict was predicted and solved -- with legal and historical precedents -- all those decades ago. The failure of leaders, including Israel's, to follow the law is the real "obstacle to peace."

The fact is this: no one even comes close to discrediting anything written in this book. Instead, those who might try, like John Quigley, are shown to be -- with overwhelming evidence -- frauds, liars and near-antisemites. How much evidence? The book has 650 pages of it...

Howard Grief's book lays to rest, without hesitation, restraint or doubt, some of the biggest and most pervasive myths of the modern day. Myths like "Israel is illegal, there's an occupation, settlements are illegal." All discussed, all definitively disproven.

In fact, this is perhaps the book's only drawback. The evidence and content can be so overwhelming at times, forcing one to have to back a few pages and re-read before beginning to understand what Grief is getting to. However this can also be seen as an example of just how thorough it is: sometimes you get so lost in the myriad of details and evidence you forget about the big picture.

This book should be read by everybody. Everybody. Politicians, journalists, lawyers, analysts, everybody. What it documents is truly unique, and what it fights against is so sadly not: the denial of Jewish rights.

An amazing book, written by an amazing man, and an amazing lawyer. Absolutely highest recommendations.

The technology has been utilized in identifying remains from victims of the World Trade Center twin towers collapse following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the President Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal, and the identification of the remains in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Indeed, our perceptions of history have been changed with DNA evidence that revealed Thomas Jefferson fathered a child by one of his slaves. Apart from coverage, the book is well edited, attractively laid out, and makes productive use of its four-color format. Abundant figures and tables help explain and enumerate basic concepts as needed. A feature that is found in several parts of the book that I found particularly appealing is the detailed sourcing of information. This is a very good book, and will serve many practitioners and students of forensic DNA typing as a single source reference. It could also serve as a text for a one semester graduate level course in forensic DNA typing and technology. It is hard to think of a topic in forensic DNA typing that is not treated in the book. Accordingly, it will be a sort of standard reference book in the area. If there are plans to keep the book up to date every few years, it has the potential to become the standard reference, perhaps something akin to Clarke in drugs and toxicology. A final point is that the book is a phenomenal bargain in this day and age at around $80 a copy. Since it was first used in a criminal investigation in 1986, forensic DNA testing has become not only one of the most high profile tools available to the legal system, but also one with a very high degree of confidence. John Butler has been involved, first in the validation of the short tandem repeat (STR) markers that form the basis of the FBI's nation-wide DNA database (CODIS) and, lately, in the development of new and innovative technologies that may influence the future of the field. John M. Dr. Butler earned his PhD from the University of Virginia while doing DNA research in the FBI Laboratory's Forensic Science Research Unit. He has won numerous scientific awards, including being named Science Watch’s #1 world-wide high-impact author in legal medicine and forensic science over the last decade (July 2011). He has over 150 publications in this field and is a frequent presenter on the topic of DNA typing, and has authored four other DNA Typing books including Advanced Topics in Forensic DNA Typing: Methodology. Outstanding Text Book on Forensic Science

This book is an outstanding text book for those interested in Forensic Science, Genetics, and Genealogy. However, like most text books you must realize text books are often 3-6 years behind latest science and technology. In the case of Genetics and Genealogy markers, this book is 6 years behind. However, it is put together with enough information to give the reader an expert understanding and appreciation of both the science and the technology.

Forensic DNA Textbook

I will be using the text for my fall class at the University of Florida this fall. I just started getting into the chapters, but I like how the author brings in case history to explains different topics covered. The inclusion of charts, graphs and pictures also adds to the students comprehension of the material. I also like that the author gives numerous reference sites should additional information be sought. Oh! and I like that this book is availabe on-line or available for the Kindle reader. :)
